  • Capturing Canon XLH1 1080f. Problems

Posted by Harry on March 26, 2006 at 5:19 pm

I know that Apple is likely to implement capture for Canon XLH1 24f with FCP6, but meanwhile I’m trying to capture – or rather kidnap and force – some Canon 24f footage into FCP 5.

I’ve tried the HDVxDV into MPEG Streamclip route, but I immediately hit a problem which is that the Canon automatically switches off the ability to send 24f via firewire when you plug the firewire plug into the camera when the camera is set to HDV. Canon says it does this because the bitrate is too great, or something.

So, unless some kind samaritan (possibly YOU) knows another way of getting round this, HDVxDV is not gonna work for me.

I could get it out of the camera via the SDI output, but the size of the files would be ridiculous.

I do have a little SonyDVMC A to D convertor. I wonder if that would work? Heh heh.

Is there any other realistic approach other than waiting for Apple?

    Thanks,

    Harry.

PS: I posted this on the HDV forum too, which I know is kinda bad form, but I’m getting desperate around here.

That can’t be the case. I’ve been sent m2t files from the Canon in 24f mode, captured over firewire.

    Hmmm

    Thanks for the reply, Graeme.

However, when I set my camera for HDV output over firewire and set “downconvert” to “off”, as I was instructed to do by the HDVxDV support people, the camera looks as if it’s happy, but when I plug in the firewire cable, these options revert to “auto” and “on”, respectively.

If I start with the firewire cable plugged into the camera and computer, the camera output options in the menu remain on “auto” and “on” (downconvert) and cannot be changed – they are grayed/yellowed out.

    Something’s wacky here.

Maybe I should have another try at Canon’s support line?

Other people seem to have had success with this method, no.?

Any further ideas welcome, and thanks for the reply,

    Best

    Harry.

PS: Hope the little one – probably enormous by now – is doing well.

    Doing great!

I’m not sure how to help as I’m not an XL1H owner. I know it does work though! I’ve asked a friend I know has done it to help out.

i, like grame, do not have (though i want) an xlh1, but one thing id suggest to look at is what is your computer reading the xlh1 as? if it thinks your camera is say an xl2 or worse your standard firewire ntsc deck

if this is so, the xlh1 will respond by setting itself to best suit this “guestimation”

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply to my drama. In fact the software does know which camera it is and displays the name in a little box – yes it is the correct camera.

    It’s all a great mystery.

    Best wishes,

If you capture through hd-sdi, you could go to other codecs than uncompressed – like DVCPRO-HD or maybe even photo-jpeg FWIK.

Then the files would be more handlable and you would be within an I-frame format.

Final Cut shines with DVCPRO HD

Thank you for the advice. You are not the only one who tells me to take this route, so I’ll be taking a shot at the SDI method.

    Many thanks again
