How can I edit 720/25P PAL HD footage?

Okay, I’m going mad here so hope you guys can help me out. I have posted part of this question here before, but did not get any nearer to an answer so I am posting all my problems here today.

This question is in three parts.

Here is my situation. I have two camcorders that I will be using in a two camera shoot i.e. both lots of footage will end up in the same sequence in the same timeline, but both formats of these camcorders are slightly different.

First camera is Panasonic HVX200, which will be used in DVCProHD 720/25P mode. Second camera is JVC GY-HD101E, which will be used in HDV 720/25P mode. So far, the only difference is that the latter is HDV and the former is HD; not sure how that effects things in the final edit mixing these two up on the timeline.

Second part of the question is this.

I have a dual 2 gig Powermac G5 with 1 gig of RAM, 1 internal 250 gig HD and an extra internal 500 gig HD, both 7200. I also have two external LaCie hard drives, one is 60 gig FireWire 400, the other is 250 gig FireWire 800.
Software is Final Cut Pro HD complete studio suite, but I also have Avid Xpress Pro (HD is not out for Mac yet, my Xpress Pro is 3 months old).

None of the above can handle HD or HDV 720/25P footage; but I know Final Cut Pro well as I’ve been using it for years, Avid is very new to me and I have not used it yet so I would rather stick with Final Cut for this.

I need to edit this programme in about 8 weeks time and I don’t know if Apple will have support for 720/25P by this time.

I’ve looked at Lumiere on there site, but it looks like a HDV thing, not HD and can’t get any straight answers from them as I can’t post on their site. Will Lumiere handle both the above camcorders footage and how would it work?

If Lumiere is not the answer, what are my options to retain maximum quality?

My final result will obviously be a standard def DVD, so a bit of advice on how I would achieve this from a HD project?

The third part of the question is relating to the Panasonic HVX200 and the current price of P2 cards. I have one 8 gig card, but in the field when it gets filled up (after 8 minutes or so), what else can I do as I can’t afford a wallet (no pun) full of P2 cards. Is Firestore up to the task, or an Apple laptop to dump the P2 cards to perhaps?

Thank you so much for your patience and time guys, but so far the HD/HDV thing appears to be a little tricky and I am slightly tempted to shoot in SD mode and just edit away in a way that I am familiar, but this would seem like a waist of money for two great HD and HDV cameras.

I will really appreciate your advice on the best workflow option for me to go for.

Sorry, forgot to add this: Should I be looking at a different edit solution altogether that does not involve FCP or Avid? Canopus or something else for Mac perhaps?

Your problem has been discussed a lot.

There simply isn’t a 720 p25 solution out there as of yet.

    Hooray!

    So what to do?

    Some suggestions:
Shoot the HVX at 1080 p25. Then you’re OK.

Dump through an AJA that can upscale to 1080 psf25 (p25 in an i50 stream) like you would with a varicam/AJ 1200 solution. No Firewire for this one…

Wait for the NLE people get their act together and remember that the US is actually not the whole world.

Send a polite mail to the BBC. They use a lot of HVX’s together with FCP, but I suspect they’re going the 1080 route.

We’re quite a few in your shoes right now, so don’t forget to send a polite request to apple on their feedback pages.
