There is also what I call Neiman Marcus syndrome. Many like to go to the best, not because it’s the best but because it is the most expensive. Those marking up by percentage can mark up more at these places and those with budgets they have to drain to get the same budget next year LOOOOVE to over spend.

About 20 years ago, I was making wedding videos. I noticed all the low balling and decided to go the other way. While other companies offered multiple packages for different prices, I went to one package at about three times the amount of anyone’s lowest bare bones package. What happened? Bookings galore. Did I do anything different, video-wise than I did when charging a third? Not a thing. I simply attracted rich snobby country club mothers of brides that came to me not for a video, but for bragging rights.
You could say some think a product is better because it’s more expensive. I think they just wanna tell folks how much they spent.

This is the downfall of Avid.
8k mojos can stumble along with HD but early 40k Adrenalines advertised to be able to, can’t handle HD at all.
Their revolving door of execs caught up with em a long time ago.

[Matthew Mullen] “You don’t think Avid adds new features in their major releases?”
    I do not.
In the meridien days and before, a new release gathered editors around to ooo and ahhh. Now, well like I said, when I upgrade, it’ll be to FCP. They simply stopped trying. I assume they are gearing up to sell or merge. Should that happen, I’ll stoked for the next release. It’d be impossible for me to write another check to em as is.

I do understand the incentive of self empowerment. However, never have I seen a commision only sales dude of any kind who was worth a flip. Nothing to lose means, well, not much happenin’. This is the society we’ve gone out of our way to create. We breed lazyness then pretend not to understand why the economy blows and the borders flow with workers.
Want a good sales force? Do a helluva great job for every client that walks in your door.

About a decade ago, Avid stopped upgrading and started updating. That is to say, instead of releasing bigger better product to evolve the brand, they went to creative marketing that led them to having to just fix bugs… getting their client base a bit closer to what they thought they purchased (due to that “creative” marketing I mentioned).
Years ago, Avid could go from a MC version 4 to a v5 and their clintele could expect new goodies, in that case, the 3D DVE. Today, back on an MC v4.something something, the update is a bug fix. Why do so few update? Because with one bug fix comes an introduction to another… waiting to be discovered with a client in the room.
I’m still on MC v2.5.2. When I upgrade, it’ll be to FCP.

Beats vary from song to song, show to show. I’ve heard many say they can’t hear or keep a beat. Ironicly, I can usually look down to see their foot tapping to perfect rythem.
A beat is simply a measurement of a situation’s pace. You use them in your daily life without knowing you do.
Like, your wife says you guys are goin’ out to eat and it’s a place you hate. You don’t respond with a “cool, baby.” unless you really dig it. In this case, you’d give it a beat… maybe even two

    then say “cool, baby.”

In a nutshell, when a client asks for another beat, do it when it feels right… only later.

    Don’t pre pay.

  • The key to success has always been to bring in more than your expenses… enough to turn profit. That has less to do with what ya spend and more to do with what ya bring in. I stay small not because I don’t wanna make more money, but because I don’t wanna work more. We can kid ourselves inbto thinking we can deligate as we grow. We can to an extent but I’m hear to tell ya, the bigger the studio gets, the more work the owner will do, regardless of what that work is on any given day. Make it big enough to feel like a real job and, imo, it’s easier to just get a real job and finance that pimp that calls himself my uncle.

You can use compressor the same way or normalize it using the reverse thinking.

Just rework the workflow. Have one seat handle one person, place or event, ect. Then one editor can act as online dude by stacking all the pre-made sequences.
    Just a thought.
Don’t get all mad at your workflow though. (or management)
If management knew the best way to create things, they’d be creators, not managers.
