Avid Color correction problem
Posted by Pratul Gaikwad on March 19, 2010 at 6:40 pmI am working on a student project…i need to do little color correction on the original footages shot on P2 camera…
I found that AVID video monitors are displying images with less exposure than the actual ones..visuals look more dark than their original look
I took a dump of the rough cut and played it on VLC player…. it gives correct display.. so its definitely not a problem with my machine monitor .. its only to do with AVID video displys ..
I am not able to judge the correct colors because of the incorrect display of in AVID application ….i m not able to find avid disply settings where i can adjust avid monitors …
Anys idea ..whats th exact problem .. i am using MC 4

March 19, 2010 at 7:56 pmThe problem is that you cannot in any way use the COMPUTER monitors to judge quality when color correcting. You need to have a MOJO or Nitris DX box connected to the system, and a professional broadcast monitor, or at least a good HDTV. Sorry, but this is the way it is, and no, it isn’t cheap.

March 21, 2010 at 5:15 amThe problem is not the Avid application. It does what you tell it to do based on what your eye is seeing on your computer monitors. Computer monitors are not accurate for colour grading purposes. As mentioned earlier you need a Mojo and a proper, calibrated broadcast monitor to make accurate colour decisions.

Doesn’t your school have Avid’s with these monitors? You can take your drive and project there to use them, can’t you? When I was in school, we had ONE Avid, and no one had the good fortune to have the software on their own computers.

They aren’t “Avid video monitors.” They are computer monitors, and computer monitors aren’t designed to show off full quality video. They are designed to allow you to see what you are doing.
This is why a LOT of people who are budget conscious go with FCP. Because you can get a device to play out the video signal for under $500 (there are three options in that price range) and then hook that up to an HDTV. The cheapest Avid option is the MOJO DX, and that is $8000.

March 21, 2010 at 9:20 pmIf you’re a student you can pick up an SDI Mojo for around $950 from sellers on ebay. This will give you proper video input/output.
I’m curious as to why you keep calling them “Avid” monitors? The Avid software is simply running on an off the shelf PC or Mac, so not sure why you think the colour issue is caused by Avid.
Personally, I grade in Avid a lot when budget doesn’t allow us to go to a higher end suite. With an SDI out and a calibrated SDI capable CRT monitor, whatever I do in the suite looks exactly the same when I see it on air.

March 21, 2010 at 10:47 pmIs that SDI Mojo capable of HD?

March 22, 2010 at 2:44 amNo MojoSDI’s do HD. They’re SD only. You have to go to the MojoDX for HD.

March 22, 2010 at 3:18 pmThis is the downfall of Avid.
8k mojos can stumble along with HD but early 40k Adrenalines advertised to be able to, can’t handle HD at all.
Their revolving door of execs caught up with em a long time ago.
