    I’d keep it all stereo.
Mixing stereo music with mono music will be a bummer. He’s right as far as not mixing them, he just went the wrong way. The only time I ever do anything in mono is when somone needs a splat track. Outside of that, I pan all mono tracks to the middle (unless going for effect like a quazi surround sound).

We use to retime movies and shows when I worked at TNN.
Each network does this in house with their staffers when they recieve material not ideal for their network.
Objectional content, retiming of commercial breaks, sponsored tags and bumpers, ect.

    man, I’d go for repair.
I havn’t seen or heard of this one but I don’t see how you’d have anything to lose with trying that. You can keep the ‘unrepaired’ project on file just in case it tears stuff up.

It doesnt sound like this is an HD project at all. Up converting does not make HD. You will see that it’s not. Cutting it with stuff that is will just make it stand out that much more. Ask em what they want but it sounds to me like you are on the right track with a 720 project. You should be able to get your source material in. I don’t know why your Avid is not letting you do that. Can you be more spacific?

you can use same as source or 720X486.
The interlacing is from the quicktime reference, I believe. You have to do a video mixdown before exporting it for DVD. Drag, I know but that’s the deal.

    what?
man, you have to feeeeeel the music. You can’t do that just foot tappin’. No man, I’m talkin full on air quitar, fist in the air with a healthy “thank you good night!” when the track is finished.
When your head bangs, the potential in points are the ones where your head is actually banging… the front part.

They are in the digitize tool. I figured about ten years ago or so Avid would work these into being useful for us but alas, still sportin’ the external scopes from the late 80s.
I know, your thinking, what!? I can’t just pop up a waveform monitor and vectorscope and see if my output is illegal with an Avid product!?
It’s best to just laugh. Helps ease the pain.

I’d go for stereo. This seems liek the point of posting audio to me. Otherwise you could just use the camera mix right?
I spit everything out in stereo. I just use the mono audio from that same camera and marry it to stereo music. Unless I spit out a split master, I have no use for mono.

I typicly have a intro or big swell of music up top then a back-timed finish. I hide the seam in the middle with a lil dissolve under some vo. When really wanting to loop a clip, I just mark in on a kick drum toward the end (on the sequence) and an in point on the same beat at an earliewr point in the clip in the source and repeat it. This is kind of like driving. It’s instinctual for some and ya just can’t explain it to others.

March 24, 2007 at 4:20 am in reply to: How do I get started working from my home?

I am now working from home. My overhead is my Adrenaline payment. I sent out a postcard to all the studios that use to be my competition offering my services for half of what they’d bill for. I am marketing myself as their overflow house, picking up the gigs they may not have the man power/drive space/time for. This is valuable to them becuase it allows them to bill 185ish an hour for paying 100 an hour and more importantly, it allows them to not have to say no to a client when swamped… something that can be quite costly.
Did I sell myself short at 100 an hour? I don’t think so. I realize I am setting myself up to become known as the cheapest suite in town, not the best. I think it could be viewed as that if I were still in a boutique kind of setting. I’m not though. You have to step over a trike to get in the door and pet the dog to get to the suite… which is not a suite at all, it’s our family room with an Avid in it. That’s basicly a high freelance rate with an anty for an Avid payment. Fine by me. I sit unsupervised in my skibbies pettin’ that dog much of the time. I’ve averaged 30 hours of billing a week so far. The peaks and vallies are what’ll kill a brother. Living week to week, I just can’t afford those vallies anymore. We chose a peak and valley industry. This is not going to change. When I’m swamped I’ll be too swamped and and when I’m not booked I’ll be waaaaaay not booked. I have to be prepaired for when I’m booked like crazy. I have to keep what I meantioned earlier in mind…. to never say no to a gig. To find a way to shoehorn it in at 3am after one gig is done and before another starts at 7. I have to understand thats a temporary wave I will treasure when I’m lookin at a blank schedule book.
Also, I have to know how to go with those vallies. Not to stress but to savor. To know when to walk around the block without my cell phone and to know when not to freak out, depart with my overhead and get a real job.
Throw yourself in, man. It’s a much more feasible thing to do if you make yourself require it. If you have a day job to rely on while taking steps towards this, you may never step far or wild enough.
