I got paid by the hour puttnig my boss’ name in the credits instead of mine for way too many years to even read credits anymore.
As an editor, you are in the oppeasing business. That means taking the blame, should there be any to have and handing off all credit when things go great. If ya don’t dig that, you are going to have to become a producer.

About 10 years ago, I’d lay off a “mom” reel of shows I thought she’d like. I’d put my name in the credits as head groovy dude and she liked that. Try it. it’ll make ya feel better.

It’s fair to think of DS as an Avid that does not require After Effects open in the background. To this day, DS is by far Avid’s premier bad boy. Makes me wish they would have created it.

You will be able to sit down and get the basics without crackin a manual but it handles other tasks very differently and you’llw anna set some time aside to go through it before booking a session on it.
While they altered it’s interface a bit to look more Avid like, it really is not the same interface at all.
You’ll dig it’s quality. Leaps and bounds over Avid’s lower solutions. One can actually rotate a PIP without aliasing! Something an MC or Symphony still cant do to this day.
Until reciently, it’s price point is what kept most Avid users/owners on an MC. Now that it’s becoming affordable, more users than owners are intrigued as owners know what they can put in a FCP suite, know what they can get out of it and still can’t justify the difference in price point.
I do see plenty of em on ebay for steller prices these daze. Kind of rollin the dice thatw ay but I know of no way that does not involve a gamble.

You can export quicktimes and then when you go to make both NTSC discs and PAL discs, it’s just a matter of starting a new project in FCP and letting it convert upon import for you.
I was doing this at a PGA event last weekend. Other than huge clunky files, it worked fine.
I have not tried the QT ref with the OMFI file trick but if you creat new folders for those, you’ll be able to find em and utilize em quicker than waiting on big exports.

The most detailed I’ve ever gotten with drop and goes is “yeah, it’s ok to leave it att he door if I’m not in.”
I have never had a real client ask what elements were appropriate but I have had a few grinders show up babblin about a youtube file or something like that.
I have found pretending like you thought they were kidding to be a fun response.

I use to think that once voice activation was the norm on computers that we editors would be out of a job. I really did look at it as we were the go between from producer to machine.
Now, I see very few producers are producers at all and even fewer are editors. As more and more producers are handed laptops with FCP on them, more and more blank looks are offered to laptop screens on airplanes, our rates slowly trickle up.
I say bring on the kiki wipes, man. They create job security like a mofo.

throw a simple PIP effect on in Avid and rotate it just a bit. screen grab that for us and upload it.
Then, throw a new layer in AE, scale it down to 50 percent and rotate it just a bit and render a frame for us. You will see aliasing from 1995 vs a a rotated sharp edged box one can use.
If Avid had an editor on staff, I dare say this would have been fixed in like ’96.

Their revolving door of CEOs did not help. As a new suit would pop up, we could only look at his or her background and speculate what was to come. We have only been able to speculate because we have learned we can’t trust anything they say from their advertising to their white sheets.
Lose trust in your clientele and, well, ya lose your clientele.
Now it would seem they are more interested in moving boxes of software in the prosumer market than wrestle their way back as top dog in the broadcast industry. Thing is, they are going against a lot of companies really good at moving boxes off the shelves of best buy. They’ll wind up failing at both if they don’t hone in on what it is thay wanna be when they grow up.

I just do broadcast.
I’ve been on an Avid product since ’94. What I have seen over the years is major growth by applications from other companies and the big A allowing them to pass em up.
It’s the same with any industry… effort is required to stay on top. When they stopped trying, they got left behind.
