I’m not quite sure what the delima is.
No need for a video mixdown unless I am misunderstanding something.
He can lay it off with a digital cut directly to Dbeta for mastering. If he can’t pull off the sound design within Avid itself, he can hand you anything from an OMF to a quicktime movie. Are you on protools?
Often time does not allow for that, which is why I mention just having him finish it up himself. I do know facility owners love to double bill but it’s something that has to be done without missing deadlines. Not trying to squeez you out of the loop but in my opinion, a good editor has no need for a sound designer to come behind him. Sweetening is by far done quickest with the project open right in front of him.

at 1500/wk you have to look at what you are making right now.
I’d respectfully pass as that would simply put me in the red. I’d offer the two days work that buys at their place and let them respectfully pass.
You will find no more diplomatic way to pass on a lo/no gig than for them to not be able to afford you.

You are right though, if you sign for for a series, it does pay less than a one day gig but it usually pays about 750 per day for series work. A real series would not dare pay lower than that becaise knowong they get what they pay for, they simply need more than that.

I have found all clients like to be complimented.
I see it as an opportunity to do so.

Everything Walter has sais has been absolutly spot on in the past.
What is changing IS the indie producer and nwo networks are beginning to count on dudes like us. It GREATLY reduces their investments and more and more you are seeing networks who have always held theirproduction in tight grips, allowing finished shows to come from outside sources at pennies on the dollar. While they still play hard to get, I am here to tell you they want you and just haven’t told you yet.
Don’t let 50 year old habbits detour you. You have an admitlingly uphill battle ahead of you but it’s no more uphill than getting that first low paying gig in the video bidness way back when.
I can tell you I have never sold a successful series. That in no way changes the fact that I’m going to.

This is what has changed drasticly as a result of Adrenaline alone.
FCP is quite the norm now and it’s a trand that is RAPIDlY tapering off Avid products from the professional vidiot world.
A great way to see whats what is to mearly surf editing jobs today. Hit mandy.com and see how many FCP gigs are offered compaired to Avid editor gigs and that will be your accurate count for this suite vs that suite. We have not been able to go by Avid’s numbers on anything for several years now.
I’d say today it’s 60/40 now slated toward other than Avid products and I say that fully agreeing that 4 yeras ago it was an 80% Avid world.
I guess thats my biggest disappointment with Avid. They have spent more time denying this trend than taking steps to mend it.
I don’t see them as a major player in years to come.

If you can skip tc accurate layoff, you can just crash record it to a master. I am able to get away with this more often than not. Saves alot of troubleshootin’ time.
Cant always do it but it helps when ya can.

You’ll find it’s about 900 bucks per market.
I am having to pick and choose which market(s) based on my budget but with every one, I am able to aquire more sponsorships.

the going rate ranges from free to 300 bucks an hour. Only you know what it is you need to do a job and make a profit without chasing the client away.
As a national average (subject to change market to market) you will find the average freelance rate is 50 bucks an hour and the average rate for a decient edit suite is 175 an hour. If your suite is not an edit suite but a computer in a basement, just stick with that 50 bucks an hour as a way to talk em into allowing you to stay home and edit in your underwear as opposed to puttin on the dockers and doing it at their place.

September 6, 2008 at 2:55 pm in reply to: Need advice with approaching for Sponsors or Partners

But they will have to see examples.
My first sponsors were in trade for videos. I have more free parts on my daily driver than I can shake a stick at but they are now in line as monitary sponsors as a result of my investment and their faith int he project.
Here is my sponsor page if it helps at all:
    https://ModdinArt.com/sponsors.html
Now, I could have gone high road with a vibe that feels like the show is already a hit. I found early on that my one-man-band approach is what attracts these guys…who are often one man band companies.
