    I found that for “hose-like” objects the simplest way is a circle extruded along a spline, a “point cloud” (free plugin) to generate Nulls for each control point of the spline, and animate the xyz of the Nulls – easy, no bones, no IK….

    in timeline, right click on your object, select:new track/time
    select the position lines (or ALT select just one – X,Y or Z), and drag your new time track into the attributes.
    in FCurves open the TIME TRACK and you’ll see a linear time progression, adjust interpolations. Add keyframes if you want the time to “bounce” etc.

    I have no target expressions, I used the “IK tool” to move the last bone around, and just hit “record keyframe” button.
    I am sure I am missing a major step somewhere, as my “method” just doesn’t work 🙂
    Is there a tut on simple bone animation somewhere?
