  • Environment and volumetric shaders…

    …stupidity strikes again!(?)

    Hi all,
I seem to have hit the wall with the environment object (C4D v9).
The manual states: “You can use Environment with volumetric shaders…Simply apply (…)as a texture”
Here’s where I hit the wall.
What are the volumetric shaders. I thought that the noises would be, but tried in colour, alpha etc and absolutelly NOTHING happens to the environment (or its fog).
There is no entry under “volumetric shadres” in the manual. There is a mention that the “old” SLA shaders are “volume shaders” but they also seem not to work.
I know how to use the Pyrocluster with particles (smoke etc.) but how do you apply it to the environment?
Which shaders can be applied to environment?
    I am lost….

    TIA

The Environment object can be used to generate structures that are not bound to the geometry of “real” polygon objects. That’s why Pyrocluster needs it to generate clouds and other volumetric effects.
The Environment object has its own material build right in, the fog option, but beside these examples I don’t know any other real world use of this feature.
Beside this volumetric materials can be found under “New” in the Material Manager. There are also some channel shader that can calculate volumetric structure like the 3D Noise shader or the Marble shader.

    Kind regards,

    Thanks,
Strange that the manual just says “…just use a texture” and doesn’t go into any detail of which channel, and how…

    oh, me again, sorry,

BTW, what’s the story with the 3D Noise Shader, which so many people reffer to. whare is it?
In my V.9 i have noise, simple noise, many algorythms for the noise shader, but nowhere can i see “3D noise”…?

The Noise shader now uses 3D noise. Only simple Noise is plain 2D Noise.

I only know that you can use the environment object to sample through the whole scene when you do a shader plugin for Cinema 4D. This allows you to place volumetric structures in your scene without having to use any other objects. I see this more of a possible use instead of a ready to use feature with the standard shaders that come with C4D. Beside Pyrocluster I don’t think there is any other shader or material supporting this right now.
