  • Up yer nose with a rubber hose….

    Hi everyone–

I’m fairly new to C4D, so please bear with me.

I’m trying to model a rubber hose (like a fire hose or garden hose) that I can organically bend at multiple points, but I’m having some major issues. My best approach so far has been to create a long & thin cylinder solid & add a couple of bend deformers that I’ve sized to be just larger than the circumference of the cylinder.

The problem I’m having with this approach is two-fold: 1) I have little control over the individual bend deformers (if I change the strength or angle of one, the whole object changes), and 2) the bend is not very organic–even using a HyperNURBS, it looks like a bent paper towel tube (flat bend) rather than a rounded bend that a rubber tube would have.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would consider using bones or one of the path deformer plugins.

Thanks Adam! Would you mind explaining a bit more how this would be done using bones (what settings & such)?

    Hey,

    Can you try this:

    1. Add a Circle Spline, make its radius 5m
    2. Using the Freehand Spline tool, draw some shape you want your hose to be.
    3. Add a SweepNURBS object.

Ok, you should now have 3 objects in your Object manager: a Circle, a Spline, and a SweepNURBS.

    4. In the Object manager, Drag the Circle onto the SweepNURBS.
    5. Drag the Spline onto the SweepNURBS just below the Circle.

BOOM!!! A neat looking tube that you can use as a hose. IF you want to add more bends, you should be able to simply click on the Spline object in the Object manager and manipulate it all you want, the SweepNURBS object will make sure that it maintains the shape of the Circle.

    Take care,

    Nick

I found that for “hose-like” objects the simplest way is a circle extruded along a spline, a “point cloud” (free plugin) to generate Nulls for each control point of the spline, and animate the xyz of the Nulls – easy, no bones, no IK….

I enjoy seeing how many different ways there are to pull off a certain animations. Its a great sign of a a software’s versatility. So, here’s another approach. Start with a circle within a circle, then connect to make a compound shape. Draw a spline that is the beginning shape/path of the hose, making certain you have enough points to edit it later. Make a sweep nurbs of the O and the path, edit the points’ positions and curves using PLA on the path.

I did this tutorial here at the cow way back when cinema was at version 6….It’s exactly what you’re asking for…..
