You need both Sony XDCam Browser as well as XDCam Transfer and the drivers at https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm and use Transfer for getting it all into FCP, but Browser I use for bringing the cards into their own folders in a manner whereby I do not overwrite a BPAV folder.

Getting people that haven’t used BPAV folders to use that would be a nightmare. I see so many posts on this site with savvy camera people befuddled by BPAV until they use it a few times. I would recommend QuickTime H.264 and not mp4 either, as you can’t edit this in FCP without the Calibrated plugin. H.264 is not terrible looking, and although it can’t ultimately stand up to Pro Res, I would not know the difference at first glance.

This is what is so maddening about Sony not marketing their workflow for XDCam EX. I see so many of these kinds of similar posts, and you would think they would attempt to tend to it. You need both XDCam Browser as well as XDCam Transfer. Browser is for securing your footage at the time of the shoot and making sure it is going into the right folder structure. XDCam Transfer is for getting your footage into Final Cut Pro.
You can indeed just drag and drop those BPAV folders, but it is important that you not overwrite them. That is where you can really go wrong. So make a folder for each SxS card and call it Card A and Card B and so on and drop each consecutive BPAV folder into the right folder that you set up. Forget the directory problem you think you are having.
When you use XDCam Transfer go to preferences first and choose where you want to download your transfer footage to. I always keep it in a folder in Capture Scratch, as I am a bit traditional with FCP. I like to know where to find it. Then import all of the BPAV folders into Transfer as you will want to span the clips that may have spanned from one card to the next, and then go to Transfer All Footage and you have it made. Either do this from FCP or Command I the footage into FCP.

Did you use XDCam Transfer, and not just Browser? FCP doesn’t see the footage until you take it through XDCam Transfer. Go to https://www.sony.ca/xdcamex/software.htm and download the drivers also.

Why do you want noise canceling? Is it because you will be editing on a plane? Because I would want to hear everything without distortion so I wouldn’t even want EQ. But I can understand if you are trying to edit in a noisy area and don’t have a choice.

With all of this being said in this entire thread, I am an SxS XDCam user and in the field I use my 15″ laptop mostly for footage ingestion, rarely for editing. None of the changes really bother me except the potential of reduced ingestion speed having to use an external device. So what are the alternatives behind this kind of workflow?

Experiment with deinterlacing. Herringbone wouldn’t have mattered if you’d shot progressive. Well, it wouldn’t have mattered on progressive screens and computers.

Rafael is so right, and may I add that anytime you encode a video more than once it is going to start looking depleted no matter what. All codecs are lossy codecs. And H.264 plays wonderfully on Flash players in Windows or Macs.

Apple laid off a bunch of their FCP team so one wonders if they are done with improvements, or if it is minimal. The only next step I can think of is to enable FCP for some kind of live facilitation. But I’m not the brains behind any of this.
