May 4, 2008 at 9:26 pm in reply to: Maya defector looking for asylum (and help with sweeping a null)-image links-I don’t WANT to per se, but that was the only way I could seem to get the sweep to work. Do you know how to get the sweep to accept multiple items? (see my images)

May 3, 2008 at 7:38 pm in reply to: Maya defector looking for asylum (and help with sweeping a null)-image links-True, but it looks like “current state to object” applied to a series of objects doesn’t flatten them into one object (seems to make multiple objects). But applying it to a Null converts it to one new spline which allows me to shear the spline BEFORE I sweep it, which results in a non-distorted sweep tube.
…or so it seems so far…

May 3, 2008 at 6:56 pm in reply to: Maya defector looking for asylum (and help with sweeping a null)-image links-Follow-up solution:
Right-clicking the Null group and choosing “Current state to Object” seems to have cleared up the flattening by allowing me to “bake” that null group into a spline. It looks like because it’s baked, I can’t tweak it, so I’d still be interested in a formula that would build this spline in one step (which would keep it procedural) if anyone has any info.

April 18, 2008 at 10:35 pm in reply to: Best method? Overhead POV pullback from person on ground to outer space…Just to follow up this old thread, the project went well, with the transition between Maya and AE being probably the most laborious adjust-tweak-view-adjust-tweak-view part of the process.
For the AE part, setting up all my layers on top of each other as a basically 2D sandwich then pulling the camera away from the center seemed to work best. Smallest layers were most dense, and largest layers were lower res. I just had to make sure that by the time larger layers came into view I was far enough away to maintain resolution.
If you’d like to see the final shot, it’s on my reel at:

About 1 min in on the reel. Starts with a farmer holding dirt in his hands.Cheers.

I’ve always done the keying before anything else. Adding pixels that weren’t already there is just more color range for the computer to key out. That said, it might be worth experimenting. Maybe you’ll have a bit more latitude for smoothing things out with the keying controls by having the extra pixels. At any rate, if by “squeeze” you mean going back down to SD as your final master, a good key in HD would logically look tighter when you shrink it back down. If full HD is your goal, you may do a lot of tweaking and hair pulling. It’s hard enough to get a good key using compressed formats without also needing to up-rez.
Please check back and post your results.

So, at the end of the day, I still need to work with this footage, slow or not, until I get a different output from my client.
Does anyone have a link to a codec I can pop into AE(mac) so I can at least work with the (FCP)HDV footage? (HDV2)
Does it exist?Thanks,

Thanks for your input guys,
I’ve pulled this article, which suggests that the Apple Intermediate Codec may be the recommended solution for HDV users that need to move files around.https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301599

…just wanted to post a thanks for the input as well. I’ve got Maya 6.0, and only use it in about 5% of my workflow. I keep feeling like I’m re-learning it every 6 months, and have never felt confident telling clients it’s a core app of mine (which AE is). So, as my Maya6 (which has never been 100% stable for me) slowly ages, I’m also considering switching over to something a little more AE/mo-grfx friendly.

Thanks! I’m glad they already thought through this process.

I’m using v 8.0.1.8 and still ran into this problem again. May be a memory problem. I had it open with PSD and Illustrator. Restarted AE with no luck. Going to try restarting Mac.
