So here is the situation: We shot greenscreen on a Panasonic HVX200 at 1080pA24. We captured straight to FCP using DVCPRO HD at 1280×1080. What is the best workflow in this situation? Should we expand it out in AE to native HD 1920×1080 and then squeeze it back down during compression, or will stretching it even result in a better key? Our primary goal is to be able to edit with those keys in Final Cut without having to re-render (we do have Automatic Duck).

I’ve always done the keying before anything else. Adding pixels that weren’t already there is just more color range for the computer to key out. That said, it might be worth experimenting. Maybe you’ll have a bit more latitude for smoothing things out with the keying controls by having the extra pixels. At any rate, if by “squeeze” you mean going back down to SD as your final master, a good key in HD would logically look tighter when you shrink it back down. If full HD is your goal, you may do a lot of tweaking and hair pulling. It’s hard enough to get a good key using compressed formats without also needing to up-rez.

Please check back and post your results.

I don’t mean going to SD (though we did in this case) what I mean is starting from 1280×1080, then in AE changing it to 1920×1080, and then render back to 1280×1080.
