Activate your “info” pallet before your RAM preview so you can see it’s messages to you. I thought I was hanging, but it was just initializing the background processes. This takes a minute the first time. I also had to get used to my previews appearing in blocks of 8 frames, which at first looked like hang-time.

I’ve got a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW set to 1680×1050, which used to be my main (with a smaller second) until I got the Cinema Disp 23″. I’ve never actually bought two matching monitors at the same time, so I’m pretty used to the slight discrepancy in resolution as I move from my “pallet” monitor to my comp monitor with my mouse. I imagine my 23″ will one day become the “2nd” to something better, and my wife will inherit the Samsung for her print work. Poor gal always gets my leftovers.
Here’s some screen captures of both. You’ll notice I lose a very small amount of the full HD width, but so far it hasn’t annoyed. Let me know, however, if there’s a shortcut that will “present” my ram preview/footage without window borders in my main monitor. (much like Quicktime can do). That’d be a nice feature if they don’t already have it.

Dave, I’m painfully aware of this problem, and hoping you have a “Stock answer #2 for transcoding it”? I’m more than happy to transcode–the problem is crawling back to my clients and asking them for a different format.
Thanks for any leads…

I just got the 23″ Apple display. It’s just big enough at 1920×1200 for HD work (minus a couple pixels horizontally), but the price was friendlier than springing for the 30″.
I’ve set it up with my comp window and my project pane on that monitor, with everything else on monitor 2. Then, when I need to see my comp at 100%, I just CMD-0 to hide my Proj window.
So far, so good. (1 week)

To my understanding, you’ve run into a big frustration a lot of us have. Quicktime has an HDV codec, but it’s only installed if you also run FCP. If you don’t run FCP, like a lot of AE users, then even if you’re both on Macs, you’re out of luck.
Someone PLEASE tell me I’m wrong, and point me in the direction of a solution, because I’m getting really tired of telling clients that I can’t take their HDV footage, even though we’re both on Macs.

July 9, 2008 at 4:08 am in reply to: The Earth vs Render Time. Various mind-blowing questions 🙂I did a shot similar to this you can see on the reel at https://www.antifreezedesign.com
I bought the photos of a specific lat/longitude point from digital globe at various altitudes, then laid them all on top of each other, with each larger being scaled up until it matched the smaller one above it. They were in 3D space, but only spread out on the depth axis enough to be stacked. Then, I pulled my cam back. I don’t remember the render times being horrific, and that was on a 4 yr old dual 2.7 G5. Maybe because I was flat, with just faked curve (lens distortion, I think), it rendered easier. (I had to do a slight-of-hand transition to a Maya globe.)
-Greg.p.s. This post is rather old. If you’ve got a sample of it up, I’d love to see how it turned out. Ours turned out well, but the transition between the AE and Maya was a real pain to tweak by hand.

May 13, 2008 at 3:08 am in reply to: how to do the subtle wiggling effect like in Juno’s intro? If you want the letters themselves to distort, try adding a turbulent distortion to it with an evolution fast enough that there’s no discernible progression of the distortion (so it doesn’t just look like the bottom of a swimming pool).

I just got the C4D Workshop book mentioned above, and I have to say I’d give it mixed reviews. When I flip through it, I can tell that I REALLY want this book to be great, but digesting the content is difficult enough that I’m going to return it (haven’t cracked the CD yet). This would be an outstanding book if they gave it a thorough re-write/re-format by a very linear-minded English-speaker (or five).
PROS:
–Lots of detail, many details covered
–Tons of COLOR illustrationsCONS:
–Typos / translations errors
–Poorly written prose style is difficult to follow when trying to follow a sequence of instructions. For example, rather than saying “Choose Menu>Submenu>Function”, he says, “you can find this feature in the such-in-such command”, sometimes not even giving reference to the master pulldown that it’s in. I spent a lot of time cross-referencing the search capabilities of the C4D help files to find the function mentioned.
–Again, the prose style of writing make following instructions difficult: Sometimes I had to read ahead to discern whether some paragraphs are introductions to what’s ahead, or literal instructions to be performed right then.
–They tried so hard to save space that some illustrations are two full pages ahead of it’s text, completely into the next topic. Most are not on the same page as the text related to them.(p.s. Note that I’ve only read about 80 pages into it)

Tony,
Do you have a shot you can post of your result? I’m just learning how to use the sweep and am looking for creative solutions to my problem above (sweeping a null).
Thx,

May 4, 2008 at 10:18 pm in reply to: Maya defector looking for asylum (and help with sweeping a null)-image links-Also, the Shear is actually the part I need to animate, so I’m a bit stumped as to how to retain a circular tube/wire while still animating it’s Shear. (The Shear animation need is effectively to “tilt” all of the loops in a clockwise direction (see images). Unfortunately, as in my sample Swept image, you can see that the Shear distorts the object AFTER it’s been Swept, which effectively squishes the Sweep tube that makes the coil. In real life, this wouldn’t happen, thus my need to avoid it. In real life, the coil is made of something similar to 12 gauge electrical wire, and as you can imagine, wouldn’t “squash” on it’s own circumference.
So, my solution will need to include a way to animate the distortion, THEN sweep it with a non-distorted cycloid.
(As a hack-solution, do you think I could animate (squash) the cycloid opposite to the shear’s distortion to effectively nullify the shear’s squashing effect on my wire’s circumference?)
