    Hi:

We got a new 8 core Mac Pro three months ago and I’m looking for a good quality 24″-26″ widescreen LCD monitor to go with it. I’m currently using a two CRT monitor setup I’d been using for many years with our G5, a 19″ Sony for my main monitor and a 17″ Samsung for a menu monitor. (Lately I’ve been stuck using just the 19″ Sony because having both monitors connected has been leading to kernel panics, but that’s another issue.)

We want something that will display fairly accurate color for TV work; we don’t do print. I also use a trusty Sony PVM-14M2U CRT monitor to check our stuff in NTSC though an Aja IO box.

We initially tried a $400 Dell 24″ LCD but took it back because the colors were very uneven. The LaCie 324 (around $1,000) gets good reviews, but they’re backordered everywhere, and according to LaCie they might not have them until September.

There are 24″ and 26″ NEC Multisync (LCD2490WUXI, LCD2690WUXI) monitors for $1,150 to $1,250 on Amazon. Those get good user reviews.

I could go with Apple displays, but I don’t want to spring for the 30 incher, and I really want at least a 24 inch display, so the Apple 23″ monitor is a little smaller than I’d like.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

I’d search out a LaCie monitor . . . and only rely on an external NTSC monitor for what you’ll actually get.

I just got the 23″ Apple display. It’s just big enough at 1920×1200 for HD work (minus a couple pixels horizontally), but the price was friendlier than springing for the 30″.

I’ve set it up with my comp window and my project pane on that monitor, with everything else on monitor 2. Then, when I need to see my comp at 100%, I just CMD-0 to hide my Proj window.

So far, so good. (1 week)

    Hi Greg:

So you’re still using a 2 monitor setup with the 23″ Cinema display as your primary monitor. What are you using for your second monitor?

I’ve grown accustomed to having the comp and project window on my 19″ main monitor and having the timeline on my 17″ menu monitor to the left. I haven’t decided whether I want to have everything on one bigger monitor, or combine a bigger widescreen monitor with a smaller LCD menu monitor.

I’ve got a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW set to 1680×1050, which used to be my main (with a smaller second) until I got the Cinema Disp 23″. I’ve never actually bought two matching monitors at the same time, so I’m pretty used to the slight discrepancy in resolution as I move from my “pallet” monitor to my comp monitor with my mouse. I imagine my 23″ will one day become the “2nd” to something better, and my wife will inherit the Samsung for her print work. Poor gal always gets my leftovers.

Here’s some screen captures of both. You’ll notice I lose a very small amount of the full HD width, but so far it hasn’t annoyed. Let me know, however, if there’s a shortcut that will “present” my ram preview/footage without window borders in my main monitor. (much like Quicktime can do). That’d be a nice feature if they don’t already have it.

I use an LG Flatron Wide 24″ with my 8 Core MacPro and love it. It’s as nice as Apple Display, for about 650.00 – 700.00. I use a Samsung 24″ from costco as my 2nd monitor to display tools and non color-essential things. It looks great as well, but not as cool as the LG. The samsung goes for under 400.00.
