Very entertaining chat. Thanks for posting.

It seems as though this topic almost immediately sinks into quicksand on this forum due to people’s fervent beliefs that one NLE is better than another. But with the exception of Bill (no surprise there) the panel made it pretty clear that if you’re a professional editor working on a variety of projects the only thing that really matters is the end product. How you get to that end is irrelevant.

We’re now in an age of NLE platform agnosticism, with the obvious exception of Apple’s FCPX. And down the road that may end up being one of the major roadblocks to FCPX’s larger adoption.

The transcriptive plugin currently only works with premiere so I haven’t compared workflow with fcpx

Adobe CC because 99% of my work is in Premiere
    FCPX for the other 1%
Submerge 3 to easily attach open captions to finished master files. I use amara.org to create open or closed captions.
Digital Anarchy’s Transcriptive plugin because it now replaces sending interviews out to a transcription service.
    Dropsync for OSX syncing.
    Goodsync for windows syncing.
    Resilio for multiple Raid syncing
Diskwarrior because it’s saved me many times over the years.

and my favorite: Switch Plus from Telestream which is my default playback program for any and all video files when playing back outside of an editing program.

  • you’ve probably already tried this but just in case, have you made sure that you’ve selected an appropriate audio track to match your second clip audio source to?

I’ve run into problems with Premiere being able to sync if the originating track audio is set to mixdown instead of a particular audio track.

Other than that, all is working fine on my system and I’m on V.11 Oasis on Windows 10 pro.

i used to have this setup with three monitors and so i can attest that it does work fine. The USB powered monitor should only be used for showing bins and other non-video information. Only the thunderbolt monitor will play back video without issue.

  • Digital Anarchy’s plugin is also basically in beta so we’re in early stage development of this technology overall.

  • [Robin S. Kurz] “I’d say that’s the app greg was referring to, yes.”

no, I’m using Digital Anarchy’s Transcriptive plugin which is currently only available for Premiere but which I believe will eventually be available for FCPX as well.

There’ll be a number of these transcription plugins coming out because these plugins are using a web based transcription engine to do all of the heavy lifting. For those curious, create an audio file of an interview and then go to speechmatics.com and upload your file and test it out.

The scribeomatic plugin looks cumbersome and slow from the demo so I’m not sure that’s going to be the best option for FCPX users.

[Tim Wilson] ” I remember when most folks here were buying new computers every year, then every other year. “

I too remember because I’ve been making use of the Creative Cow site almost since it’s inception (although I’ll confess for the first 10 years I was only a lurker.) And one of the fascinating things about the creative cow evolution has been the continually changing attitudes towards the manufacturers of the equipment that we all make use of professionally.

The issues of how to forecast where the industry is headed and which companies will be leading the charge into the future are what make this site so dynamic and relevant. And so it’s pretty much anyone’s guess where Apple and the mothership are headed.

I think the days of an expandable and upgradeable mac are long gone. And if in fact, the new macs are going to have ram hard wired into the board then it’s pretty clear that they will expect people to fully upgrade their systems regularly.

One of the many benefits of getting off the Apple train is that I no longer fret about my edit system specs being phased out for a newer and better Apple release.
