Avid, FCPX, Premiere Pro?
I am curious as to what other software programs other people have purchased with their own money? List as many as possible. Even old programs like In-sync’s Speed Razor. If you want to list third party hardware like a Targa 2000 capture card or even a DC 10 + that would be great. I think this might get interesting.

If people could leave a few comments about the software they used (pros and cons) that would be great. Why did you folks make the switch or add other NLE to your work flow?

I feel like we’ve been over the pros and cons of each kit time 1,000,000 on this forum.
I bought Avid cause thats what I like to use, and 99.9% of my jobs are on Avid. I went through a small stint freelancing a few years ago and purchased a license. I keep it up to date annually now for 300 bucks to stay current with the softwares progression.
FCP 7 because of the same reason s above.
FCP X because I was curious and it was only 300 bucks
PPro on and off again subscription just in case I need to use it, it is definitely my LEAST favorite NLE. Runs like crap on a system that runs Avid, and FCPX like butter. Functionally feels likes a mish mash of FCP7 and Avid but without the best traits of each one. Media management is the weakest of the 3 and I feel like its going to break all the time doing normal stuff.

“Have not used Avid in a very long time but it looks like Final Cut Pro is very good in media management. Couple that with Final Cut Pro Library and one can delete render files along with transcode media very quickly.
One area that Premiere Pro is better at is keyframes. I have been using Final Cut since version 3 and there are still no hold keyframes or the ability to ease in, ease out or both. You either have linear or smooth as a keyframe option. One could blade (splice) up a clip to do hold keyframes for stylized effects though that is somewhat inefficient. You could trim where the blade made the cut but moving multiple keyframes is much better. Trimming is a split between the two. I think Avid has always shined in this area and Resolve seems to be pretty good at it. Trimming in Final Cut is not bad but could be a little better.
Compound clips are nice but there is no option to decompose in place which is useful when you want to see what is going on with edits on either side of the compound clip. I don’t do slip and slide edits very often but a 4 up display would be useful.
I love the retiming options in Final Cut due to the number of options available. Jump cut to markers is awesome as well.
One thing that is a bit of an irritant is the inability to move markers efficiently. Nudging is not that useful when you are more than a few frames off or need to move the marker across an edit point. Cut and paste is alright though seems a bit unnecessary. Earlier versions of Final Cut allowed one to move markers better not sure why Apple had to “fix” that.

I hear FCPX. Premiere and Avid discussed but if I go back 14 months or even 24 months I doubt Speed Razor or Pinnacle Studio get mentioned. I am talking about all software programs (including 3rd party hardware).

Adobe CC because 99% of my work is in Premiere
FCPX for the other 1%
Submerge 3 to easily attach open captions to finished master files. I use amara.org to create open or closed captions.
Digital Anarchy’s Transcriptive plugin because it now replaces sending interviews out to a transcription service.
Dropsync for OSX syncing.
Goodsync for windows syncing.
Resilio for multiple Raid syncing
Diskwarrior because it’s saved me many times over the years.and my favorite: Switch Plus from Telestream which is my default playback program for any and all video files when playing back outside of an editing program.

The transcriptive plugin currently only works with premiere so I haven’t compared workflow with fcpx

I thought I should state that I started editing video using an Avid MC in 1998. Our system at work was based of the Targa 2000 capture card with a Pinnacle Genie board for the real-time effects. I like the system we had at work and later built my own NLE (1998) using a Pinnacle DC 10 plus capture card and Pinnacle Studio 1.0 software. I later bought a Canopus Storm (2001) with Premiere 6.0. Premiere had a Fisher Price like GUI but Premiere Pro 1.0 was awesome. I used Edius as well as Pinnacle’s Liquid Edition. All the NLE had strengths and weaknesses as well as buggy glitches. The Canopus DVD Storm did not play well with Premiere 6.0 (it did work overall). The Matrox cards and Pinnacle Pro One were better options for Premiere 6.0.
As for now I just use Premiere Pro CC and my Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle. Having said that I just recently bought a Mac Mini and I am using the trial version of FCPX. Editing on the Mac Mini using FCPX has been decent so far but I did find a glitch/bug in FCPX within 24 hours. I hope to do some FCPX (Mac Mini) videos soon.
