  • [Bryan Roberts] ” For me performance is all about real-time playback quality, ease of dealing with more compressed 4K codecs, and maybe the biggest is export speed.”

I know you don’t want to switch platforms but you should at least investigate your PC options. I say that as a former 20 plus year Mac user. When I wanted to upgrade my edit system for smooth 4k editing I initially thought in terms of upgrading my mac but then soon realized that the Mac offerings with fast cpu and powerful GPU were extremely limiting. There’s an embarassment of riches available to you on the PC side with numerous GPU’s, CPU’s, Thunderbolt 3 enabled motherboards, etc.

I work with FS7 footage a lot and so I’d also advocate for using the media browser. And in addition, I’d advise that you don’t change the naming conventions of any of the files. This workflow has so far resulted in zero issues with these mxf files linking or relinking on any project.

john, yes that’s correct. When I add the timecode effect to an adjustment layer or transparent layer and then set it to video 1 the timecode that shows onscreen is incorrect.

I’m primarily trying to determine if this is a bug that Adobe needs to address or whether I’m missing something.

I’m wanting the individual clip timecode added to each and every shot in the timeline. I’m pretty sure that’s not an option in Encoder. And again, it can be added directly to the clips in a timeline but it won’t correctly attach itself from an adjustment or transparent layer. And while attaching the timecode does work when put directly on the clips, the problem with that is the sizing of the timecode burn changes with the sizing of each clip.

Both Clip name and time code are default Premiere effects that in theory should be attachable to any layer of video in the timeline.

I have the same problem and it ‘s quite an annoyance. If the solution is to turn off auto set to frame size that’s great but where is that setting now in Premiere?

[Bob Cole] “3. Keeping an old machine running is problematic.”

sure seems like keeping an old MBP around just for these random and infrequent needs would be the perfect solution. Unless you can create the program yourself you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone putting any energy into such an ancient program.

Through reading about people’s set ups on this forum it becomes clear that most folks are terrified to make dramatic changes with their systems. The fact that there’s still a FCP7 subset here is kind of mind blowing. And all of this is quite surprising to me since the key to survival in the video post world is staying even or ahead of the technical curve. I clearly remember the days of $50,000 Avid systems or $10,000 Media100’s and so by comparison, today’s upgrade costs are a fantastic bargain and therefore it makes no sense that folks resist upgrading.

  • If you’re open to looking at PC options, there’s a wide variety of CPU, GPU choices that will give you a solid 4k workflow. And yes, a Thunderbolt raid will allow you to work without proxies.
If you’re committed to Apple then I too would advocate that you wait for the latest Mac offerings.

Michael, you’re also working from a raid? I’m on Windows 10 as well and have no lag at all within the project panel. What about trashing all of your Premiere preferences and starting fresh?
