Others here on this forum speak highly of Cineform so i kjnow that’s an option as well.

Storage space shouldn’t be an issue since the cost of storage these days is cheap. Buy more storage if you’re short on it.

I’ve worked on many doc style pieces and that statement is quite accurate. The excitement that might happen in the field when it’s happening live can be very different when seen after the fact through the camera lens. And yes, it’s helpful to know from the director what he or she thought was the essence of what was captured but in the end the only thing that really matters is what comes through in the footage.

correct, dnxhd is the equivalent of pro res on pc.

Proxies aren’t appropriate in this instance. Your originating files aren’t worth going back to for mastering.

Transcode all of the H265 and H264 to pro-res or DNxHD and then use those as your master files.

The ideal setup for editing:

SSD for OS and programs
secondary SSD for renders and cache
external raid for media or M.2 NVMe

Your Premiere projects and all associated media should be on the external raid/m.2

And there needs to be a backup system for the raid.

Don’t convert to H264 because it too is a format that requires heavy lifting by your CPU. Before starting an edit, convert all h265 and h264 to an edit friendly codec like pro-res or DNxHD and that’ll eliminate the laggy playback issue.

create the multicams, string them out in a sequence and add markers to the multicam clips. Use the pancake method for editing and you’ll have easy access to those markers.
