There are a bunch of effects in after effects that create dots or circles like, scatterize, starburst, ball action, etc… It just depends on how you want it too look and playing with the settings to get what you want.

If you used CC particle world you could set it up as a disc or lens convex and 0 out all of the physics. So they just explode out then you could just freeze the animation in a precomp. If you don’t want it to explode just freeze them already out and mask them in or what ever way you want them to appear.

I know trapcode particular as a preset for a starfield which is just bunch of star like shapes in space you could adapt that to you needs as well.

If you want a lot of any one or multiple items your going to probably want to use some sort of effect or particle system other wise it will take a while to build.

    hope that helps,

  • I’m not an expression guru but when I have used that timeToCurrentFormat(I usally do frames) I triggered event based on If statements. So once it gets to X frame it triggers what I want to happen. This is probably a basic way to do it but that usually works for what I need.

Another way you could trigger expression is using the expression timeline script, https://aescripts.com/expression-timeline/. I use this all the time when I have more complicated expressions or just want a nice gui, and I only want an expression to happen at between a range.

    hope this helps

  • I believe I was able to achieve the effect you are looking for, although I don’t have optical flares but you should be able to do something similar with it from what I know of it.

What you can do is put the flare on black solid and set the track matte of your footage to luma. I did an quick example I can post if you need it.

    Hope this helps

July 7, 2011 at 6:34 pm in reply to: Problem with the Animation Codec?

From my experience the idea a behind the animation codec is that it is a lossless format thus you loose almost no quality when you render. The down side is it renders out large files and typical does not play well in media players on computers, especially at HD. I’m not sure about the color aspect of it since other formats do display more colors, though it does let you use alpha channels which is one of the reasons I always used it.

I have used it when rendering broadcast graphics that are to be used in final cut that later on will be render to another format or tape. Though if your going to put your work directly online then animation wouldn’t be the best codec to use.

I found this forum post here that talks about it a bit https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/961973
    and wiki…

July 7, 2011 at 6:12 pm in reply to: workflow question. Edit in C4d or FCP?

I don’t believe there is a way to do exactly what your talking about directly inside final cut.

There is a stage object in cinema 4D where you can swap out different cameras that you have in you scene to make cuts and what not. I have actually made Xpresso setup that makes this easier without keyframes, though I haven’t posted it yet,(sorry for the plug) script explnation, Animation video example. The draw back of course is you can’t do any fades in cinema 4D.

You could of course render all of your camera angles but that would take for ever and one mistake would force you to re-render for at least that cut.
One way I’ve done it is render out all the cameras but only in software or hardware preview so it takes almost no time to render. Then play around with the edit in after effects. That way I know what parts to render and either do the edit in C4D or render out just the part I need.

Just my ideas and I’m sure people more advance people in C4D have more professional or practical tips.

    hope this helps

July 6, 2011 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Replicate this effect, any ideas?

One way you might be able to get this effect is using a plugin called https://www.yanobox.com/ for after effects. It looks like it might do it for you.

another idea might be if the shapes your using, the diamond, does not have any bent curves or bevels that can only done in true 3D you might be able to build it in After Effects in 2.5D. Then you don’t have to animate in maya which doesn’t easily integrate with AE.

You could create the link lines with particular since you need to be in 3D(2.5D) space.

I would do this in Cinema 4D and just have the picture items setup in after effects to change them easily.

I’m sure there are other and probably better ways.

    Hope this helps.

  • Are you using linear workflow? If so you need to adjust for it in File > Project settings. Then change working space to SRGB and click linearized working space.

July 5, 2011 at 3:00 pm in reply to: smeared-out material

One way to achieve this faded/smeared smeared look would be use a gradient in the alpha channel. You could have one texture with a color and a gradient fall off in the alpha channel on top of another texture with the base color.
You could of course make this texture in photoshop and then just apply and adjust the texture in C4D on the object. What ever works better in your project/workflow.

If you don’t want any shading at all then try using just luminance in the material of the texture you are using. You will just get the basic color and shape with no visible sides. If you want a little bit of shading just mix it on top of the color channel using less brightness in the luminance channel.

    Hop that helps
