I’m new to C4D and I’m encountering a problem with multi-pass compositing in AE with an AEC file… all of my multipass renders looks really dark in AE when I open the AEC file.

Here is a visual example of what I’m talking about (proxy test renders with no AA and lowest GI settings):

    Single-pass render out of C4D: https://www.owenbwexler.com/c4d/singlepass.jpg
Multi-pass render in AE straight from the AEC: https://www.owenbwexler.com/c4d/aemultipass.jpg

Rendered RGBA, diffuse, shadow, specular, reflection, and GI passes as well as two object buffers for the multipass renders.

This has happened with everything I’ve tried to render out of C4D so far (three separate projects).

Using an 8-core Mac Pro with 4GB RAM and and NVIDIA 8800GT (I know… believe me… I’m planning to upgrade RAM and vid card soon), C4D Broadcast R12 and After Effects CS5.

Has anyone encountered anything like this before and would anyone know what I’m doing wrong or how I can fix this? Thanks in advance.

Are you using linear workflow? If so you need to adjust for it in File > Project settings. Then change working space to SRGB and click linearized working space.

    Hope this helps

Just checked the project settings and I am using sRGB and linear workflow.

Thanks, Greg. I had this identical problem and didn’t know why. So I did what you said and set the Depth to 16 bits per channel. Problem solved. *whew*
