I did a short version of this effect years ago for a news item. Take 20 bills, and drop them in front of a green/blue screen. So much easier than 3D apps or even a particle system.
Once you’ve got some footage, key it and duplicate it. Or film a bunch of drops. You can also get away with dropping the bills against a black background if you don’t have enough green material.

Would it be worth considering mocking up a large scale print arm and have it hit canvas or thick paper????
I would imagine prop-wise it wouldn’t be too difficult a build and might look quite strange (in a good way) to see the type hit close up?

If it helps Spiro, I’m not pushing for the upgrade where I work either. In a curious state of affairs thereappears to be some money in the budget. Shocked all the support staff atthe school I worked. But I need to be able to say “I want this upgrade because I will be able to do ….(something) that I can’t right now”.
We jumped from Flash MX to Flash 8 because I was able to say “we’ll be able to do flash video”, but AE 7 doesn’t offer anything we need. That’s not to say it’s not worth it, or that there aren’t vast improvements, but the 6.5 upgrade was worth it alone for us for the better media encoder, text pre-sets and stability.

Sorry the link didn’t work for me, but I can suggest playing around with either Particle Playground or Foam. You’d need to place your3D objects comp in another composition then apply those effects and see what you get. There’s some excelent tutorials here at the cow that can talk you through them
Alternatively, you could check out this tutorial by Dan Ebberts about using expressions to create explosions in 3D space.

I compress directly out of Window’s AE 6.5 to wmv 9 all the time. While it’s true that you don’t get two-pass encoding, the time taken outweighs the size reduction. Quality loss has never been an issue as the result is always been good enough, and on occasion that has included smoke, rain etc…
Admittedly, all my work is for intranet / CD-Rom so delivery size isn’t too important. I render using the Download 1024 option with the maximum bit rate turned down to 725. Below that we noticed some unacceptable compression. Above that increased the file size with no detectable improvement in quality.
