What a great idea!! – I have never thought to ask this. I have not heard of it being discussed – BUT this makes great sense indeed.
I know I can do a Ctrl+End to get a read out, but that then shifts my cursor to the End – fat lotta good that is?!?
No, that is an obvious request to make. If I have missed this then I must be working in a blinkered way . . .

The biggest issue with DVD creation is the amount of visual noise apparent on the finished pre-DVD burning.
Much has been written on this here, and over on the main SONY Vegas site. If you really need the noise to be kept, then a high bitrate is required to read that throughput of data being decoded back to the viewing screen. More noise the higher the bitrate and/or the ways in which that bitrate is also prepared.
I would say that unless you have some very demanding visually-noisy content throughout your DVD and/or you haven’t allowed for this in the encoding then you should be fine. In any event, when I am doing a piece of work I often make a DVD-RW test DVD to just confirm this.
So, with this understanding I would say you really don;t need to separate out your files. Just do it. BUT, this is what I also do: I also create a pre-render AVI to give myself the option of locating any issues that might happen IF I was to go directly to MPEG. Once I have that pre-render AVI I know it WILL render in something quicker than real time – PLUS I would know it works!
Now, from here, I then produce the files for the DVD:
MyFile.mpg – this will be the VIDEO only MPEG2 file
and the;
MyFile.ac3 – this will be the AUDIO only AC-3 file
I put these in the same folder and from this folder I create the DVD. Both files in the same folder. Both files with the SAME PREFIX name – MyFile.
So, to recap, unless you have majorly visually noisy content, and then you can change through Average and Constant bitrate variation, PLUS making a pre-render and then the 2 file option, you should really be good to go.
If I have missed something out I am sure somebody else will step in.
Just get that AVI done and then the 2 files and test on a DVD-RW. That’s the way I do it.

You need to set one up – as far as I can tell.
Go:
Option | Customise Keyboard | Click on GLOBAL | search on “Mute” | this should return “Edit.Event.Mute” and then type in a Shortcut Key – I’m using Ctrl+Shift+A – a bit clumsy . . .
Once back at the time line:
Click on Audio Event and do your KB SC it’ll go MUTE! Do it again and you de-mute your Audio Event.
This is NOT thru the properties, although it is revealed there, it is what you wanted. You could even set up a Toolbar Icon for it too!

I was adding to the FIRST Event, and this wasn’t being carried to the others. However, when I add it to the meeting of Event 1 and Event 2 THEN I get the result. However, the Audio is then ungrouped with result of being unsynced too.
Interesting . . . .
So I can get a Fade thru Black with the Events overlapping and no need to add to Back-end. Well, that’s the outcome, but of course this HASN’T added it to the back-end, it just appears to have done it as its the Front end that is giving the fade thru black – if you get my drift?

Chris! That is amazing! If I knew that back in V6 then I had forgotten. As you say: “First discovered it with Vegas 6.0 but as far as I know it’s undocumented.”
Well, and here’s the thing, I CAN’T make it happen in the latest VP9 nor VP8, but it IS working for me in SONY Vegas Video 7.
Chris, have you got higher than V7 – V8 maybe? Please check it out for us. I know I just tried this in VP9 and VP8 and if this is NOT happening then SONY needs to know – or, as it WAS undocumented, maybe it has kinda withered away?

You aren’t clear about a fade, as in crossFADE and overlap, or a plain FADE at the front and end of an Event?
Anyways the ways I know are:
1] Thru’: Options > Preferences > Editing > Automatically Overlap . . . This ONLY happens when you add media – then events – to timeline. You can’t do this in post-addition. To do post addition you’d need a script.

2] A freebie Script, somewhere? . . . .
3] Excalibur – Edward Troxel
4] Ultimate S Pro – VASST
Using 1] has little variation, but with 3] & 4] there is far greater depth of control PLUS you get a massive stack of invaluable extra tools too!
