I’m the guy Marco mentions above. I’ve been hit with back trouble recently, which has slowed down my development efforts, but I will eventually get my algorithm working well on video and then you will certainly see an affordable product that does best of class uprezzing. There’s some early test shots on my website, but they’re woefully out of date and the algorithm has been much improved since then. I’m hoping to get it all running on the GPU for real speed though…. Perhaps even as a Motion plugin.

Could be some kind of field order issue. Best thing is to pull the boradcast back into your NLE and examine frame by frame to see what’s happening.

It would be wonderful if you could invent a CCD that has a built in non-linearity as that would allow much better exposure control, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.

MPEG2 is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 times as efficient as a similar DCT type codec, but obviously, it’s footage and implementation dependent.

HDV is upper, is your 8bit upper or lower field?
Check out the demo of Standards Converter 2.5.2 at http://www.nattress.com and try out “G Map frames” which does awesome 50% slowdown. I’ve not tried it downconverting at the same time, but if you find you need that as a feature, please email me and I’ll figure it out for you.

But you’re shooting HDV not HD! You need FCP5 to capture HDV. FCP5 should capture both PAL and NTSC HDV no bother at all.

It’s not the same at all. Epson ink costs more than champagne or decent single malt scotch whisky. A P2 card is very heavily over-engineered for long lasting quality and robustness in the field, hence it’s price, and that along with top of the pile, expensive memory chips for speed and reliability.

Frame rendered 29.97fps footage will never match with 23.98fps (24p) footage. The best you can hope for is if the 24p has 3:2 pulldown added and is on a 29.97fps timeline that at least the frame rates are the same, but now you’ve got, effectively 24p and 30p on the timeline, and they won’t look the same.
