Well I’m not sure Avid moved your media files…

But… are you linking to these files or using avid created media?

If linking, then create a new bin, and link to the files from the new drive. (Create new links) If uts the same files as before, Avid will see that and relink your original bins.

If it is Avid created Media, you have to put them in the proper folder structure. The same one as what Avid shows on your main drive.

You can also render something to the external drive, and that will create the proper folder structure.

You are overthinking it. Download the studio version, plug in your dongle, and launch the program. Find out if it works. (yes it does)

monitoring in Resolve can be a bit of a wormhole, so without screenshots of several other areas of the program, it is going to be hard to pin down the trouble.

Some things to check.

Are you clips panned left and right

Are you hearing sound out of both speakers

are you set for stereo monitoring, mono monitoring, 5.1 monitoring

do you have audio busses set for something specific?

If you drop audio on Ch1 down to 2, can you hear it?

If you raise 2 up to 1, can you hear it?

Are you sure both audio sources are still available to the program.

You said at the start of your post “suddenly” does this mean at some point you could hear both tracks as they are currently laid out? If so, what did you change.

If you have to/can sync using waveforms, i would suggest resolve is quicker at it. However there is a pretty good gotcha, if you want to edit in Avid, and the sound house wants to sync to the original audio…which they probably will.

Check out this video. It (hopefully :)) does a good job of showing the pitfalls, and solution to doing dailies in Resolve, using external audio, but editing in Avid, and not losing all that precious audio source information.

I would ask at the start of the shoot that the cameras and the sound recorder are synced with timecode. This is the best way to sync your audio to your video.

I have used wave form sync, and it has worked, but you are pointing out the flaw with it. If the audio isn’t strong or clear enough, than issues can occur.

I would probably start by sorting everything by date and time, and see if that helps you do your syncing in smaller batches…but ya…always ask for locked timecode for all sources.

these questions always turn into a debate about pc vs mac or hackintosh.

It was a simple question…does anyone have experience with the equipment he is asking about.

If Sasha has been using a Hackintosh for 8 years, i’m sure he is well aware of the downfalls, and the upsides, as well as the tweaking that is needed to maintain one.

Sasha, for what it is worth, i built a Hackintosh about a year and a half ago. i9 with a Radeon VII

Z390 motherboard…everything spec’d at the time to be usable in a Hackintosh situation. For those who say why not try this or that…when going for a hackintosh, there are some rules you have to follow for the equipment to work properly. You can’t just choose anything you want.

Anyway, back to the box. It worked fine for me for about a year. Full disclosure, i use both Macs and windows boxes, and would do most of my work in that box while booted into windows, but i needed (at the time) a box to render out of Avid and Resolve to Prores files.

Did i notice slower renders when switching over to Mac and hitting the render button? No, but i’m not one of those that gets terribly concerned about my box rendering at 2 percent faster than another box. I get quite amused at all the testing that people do for render times. I come from the old tape days…if i can output my show at anything above real time…im totally happy. When I see 3 or 4 times real time…i’m very happy. Couldn’t care less if i could gain a bit of a speed boost somewhere along the line. I’m probably drinking a coffee anyway.

Anyway, back to the box. It worked fine, but I couldn’t get it updated to Catalina. I’m not a hackintosh expert, and i didn’t have the time to sit and fight with all the repositories to figure it out. Plus Avid finally came out with the Prores export option. In the end, it wasn’t worth it to me to try to maintain it, but as far as performance goes, that equipment worked fine on a mac, and i still use it today as a PC, and have no complaints.

Again, i used a i9 9900, Radeon VII 64 gigs ram. The z390 (designaire?) I chose has thunderbolt 3 integrated, which works both mac and Pc, so no issues there.

My original Hackintosh performed the same as my pc, i just couldn’t maintain it properly with all the updates.

I find this is usually a problem with the link.

Try deleting the linked clip from your bin.

Then simply just go build the link again from scratch.

Quite often i find even without deleting the link, but going through the motions of linking the clip, it will show up on my timeline properly after avid sees what drive i’m looking at…without actually clicking on the file for a link…it just needs to reprocess that folder structure.

PITA, but it seems to correct itself easily enough.

The one tip i will give you about the paint tool, is that it defaults to multistroke mode, which only does your paint work on the frame you are working on, unless you specifically tell it to paint on a set number of frames.

If you want to paint on the entire length of a still section, you need to change you mode to “Stroke” before you do any painting. Stroke will add the paint strokes to your entire timeline length. Hover over the paintbrush icons at the top of the interface, and you should find stroke and multistroke.
