    Oh Grinner,
You killed it on the future wife call out. I am torn because I want to show it to her because it made me laugh out loud, but if I do I know she will print it out and hang it on the bathroom mirror so i can see it each morning. Again, thanks for taking time to share your thoughts. Much appreciation.

    Hey Grinner,
Thanks so much for the response, I knew you had done numerous moves in the past so I was hoping you would share some insight. The film commission websites for each of the cities have had great listing for post production companies in the region, so that helped with making an initial list. Where else might I find a production guide? I also found Linked-In quite useful to get company info and find out where the local freelancers used to do regular work. Will continue to check Mandy and the other job sites, but the big step is to get on the horn and do a little voice chatting. Thanks again for taking the time to give me your advice. Best wishes.

    Hey Brad,
We are also editing 2.7 on unity with XDCAM and here is what we do for our producers.
We use the PDZ-1 proxy browsing software to import proxies (read file from ProDisc) which takes 5-10 min then export a disc image backup to a network drive which takes another 5 min or so. Then the producers can import that disc image into their own proxy browser and watch small clips of everything that is on the disc with timecode and make notes of which clips we need to import into the avid. So far it has been working smashingly.
Hope this workflow can help you as well.

    Annu,
What issues are you having editing XDCAM footage in MC 3.0? We use MC 2.7 and edit XDCAM all the time, both from the full size disc’s and the SxS cards. The issue may be in the programs you are using to transcode the media for the Avid.

Shane, why do you have to use Ohio as the example for bottom of the barrel? We have enough problems with the Bengals to take abuse from you too.

Kidding aside, I think an important question is where you are looking to cut this, in a post house or in the home of a show staff editor? A budget from a company with more overhead to pay will probably end up in the $150-$250/hr range

When you say you played them back on your machine, do you mean in quicktime player? In that case a slightly compressed file will usually play that way, it has to be brought into a NLE to play right. Was the 1:1 the only file the Avid would play? I dont know why the codecs are giving you errors in FCP but Ill see what I can find out and get back to you.

You can definitely import .psd files. If you want any layer effects to carry over from photoshop, you can flatten all the tracks (make a copy first so you can go back and revise). Then whenever a change needs to be made, do a batch import of that image clip in avid and it will update that .psd in your project and timeline.

In response to question 2, as of V 4.5 Sorenson Squeeze will not deal with .VOB files. V 5 may be different but I don’t believe it will play along.

    Susan,
You can either export these clips as animation files or download the Avid DNxHD codecs at https://www.avid.com/dnxhd and export them as a DNxHD 145 or higher which will give the avid editor a fast import.

There is a great issue of Cineaste a couple months back that had an immense Editorial Supplement. Numerous case studies and a very large interview Q&A with leading film editors. Well worth the 6 buck. Other than that I enjoy the other mags that have been mentioned so far with the addition of “Shoot” which covers mostly commercial work
