  • How to capture in FCP to send to Avid editor?

Posted by Susan Dempster on September 2, 2009 at 6:35 pm

I’m capturing 1080p footage from HDCAM-SR using Final Cut Pro.
I need to send the captured footage to Avid editor.
What is the best codec/format to capture from FCP so that they can import into Avid without as much hassle?

I normally capture uncompressed 10 Bit in FCP, but I tried sending those .mov files – apparently this takes a LONG time for Avid to import (at least on their system).
I read on other posts that having Sorenson Squeeze or ProCoder would do the trick, but I don’t have either…

Forgive me if this answer is posted somewhere, I couldn’t find it!
    Thanks in advance!

    Susan,
You can either export these clips as animation files or download the Avid DNxHD codecs at https://www.avid.com/dnxhd and export them as a DNxHD 145 or higher which will give the avid editor a fast import.

    Thanks for the response, Glen.

The Animation codec I exported did not play smoothly on the Avid machine.

I did download the codecs from the Avid site…
The DnxHD codec will not export – I get an error message every time. In fact, the 1:1x and the Packed codecs are the ONLY two that could export from my mac. When I try to playback those two files, the video is really jerky/stuttery.
The Avid user could not open the Packed codec. It showed only a white screen.
    The 1:1x played fine, however.

What a nightmare! It looks like the only translation I can give them is 1:1x… but at least it’s something!

When you say you played them back on your machine, do you mean in quicktime player? In that case a slightly compressed file will usually play that way, it has to be brought into a NLE to play right. Was the 1:1 the only file the Avid would play? I dont know why the codecs are giving you errors in FCP but Ill see what I can find out and get back to you.

I tried in both quicktime and FCP – the playback was equally stuttery in both.

1:1 was the only one it played correctly, yes.
I tried uncompressed 10 bit, apple intermediate codec, pro res 422 hq, and Avid Packed, all of which produced a white screen on the Avid machine.
The animation codec produced video, but I am told that it did not play smoothly on the Avid…. I didn’t see it myself so I can’t describe the playback unfortunately.

Thanks, Glen – I REALLY appreciate the help!!!
