XD Cam Workflow
Posted by Bp on October 13, 2009 at 5:24 pmHello All,
We’re using more XD Cam stuff for standard def at work on Avid 2.7.7 Adrenalines on a Unity System-PC platform. Is there anyway I can have some type of window burn on the output from the raw XD files before or after they’re injested in the AVID for logging/scriptwriting for the producers?
I think Final Cut will put a window burn on the screen but does AVID have anything similiar…a plug in possibly? It’s just taking more steps using XD at the moment. I’ve been told about a logging station setup but we don’t have one at the moment. Anyway to work around this?
Thanks,
Brad

October 13, 2009 at 7:00 pmYes, Avid has a TC plugin. And it is lightyears ahead of what FCP supplies.
Also, if you are doing a lot of XDCAM work, I seriously suggest you upgrade to 4.0. As of 3.5 the AMA function allows you to mount the drive with XDCAM files an immediately have them available for playback and editing within Avid.

October 13, 2009 at 8:53 pmThanks for the response.
The plan is to upgrade these systems in November…Avid is actually coming down here to D.C. to help out with it.
In the meantime, does this plug-in work with the older version I’m using now? Where can I find it?
Thanks,
Brad

October 13, 2009 at 9:15 pmIt is on that version. It is the Timecode effect. Not in front of a system right now and I forget the exact effect folder it is in, but is a generator and should be where the SubCap effect is.

October 13, 2009 at 9:36 pmThanks Terence,
I did a little more research and then found it under “Illusion FX” on the AVID. What it will do is let you generate a timecode window burn in on the sequence. Unfortunately there isn’t a pulldown menu in this effect that will allow you to put the source timecode from each clip in the window or the sequence timecode in the window. You have to decide yourself at what hour, minute, second, and frame the timecode starts at.
It appears that the same plug in for AVID 3.0 might be able to do it.

October 13, 2009 at 10:10 pmAs mentioned above, not sure when it was added, but look in the Effect Palette>Generator>Timecode Burn-in.
It will take the TC from the timeline and create window burn that will play in realtime. (Again not sure which version this works with.)
[Brad Phillips] “on the output from the raw XD files before or after they’re injested in the AVID for logging/scriptwriting for the producers?”
How are the clips being viewed by the producers after the clips have been ingested into the Avid?

October 14, 2009 at 8:18 pmHey Brad,
We are also editing 2.7 on unity with XDCAM and here is what we do for our producers.
We use the PDZ-1 proxy browsing software to import proxies (read file from ProDisc) which takes 5-10 min then export a disc image backup to a network drive which takes another 5 min or so. Then the producers can import that disc image into their own proxy browser and watch small clips of everything that is on the disc with timecode and make notes of which clips we need to import into the avid. So far it has been working smashingly.
Hope this workflow can help you as well.
