We have a fiber connected SAN and it works well. You will probably want to experiment with where to save media databases, previews, etc. We are keeping a lot of that on the SAN and I’m not convinced it is the best strategy.
I had some issues with G-RAID drives going to sleep when they weren’t getting accessed enough in a project/render and similar situations with Ethernet connect computers and drives. I really do suspect that this is an OS problem.
I will say that we have had plenty of issues with Apple Raid Cards. We replaced a few and, in one tower, we just gave up using a Raid Card.
Hope this helps.

I do find that Adobe programs get slowed down by trying to find files across a network, or on a drive that goes to sleep.
This may actually be an issue with Mac OS, as I have found some similar issues with Finder since switching to Lion.
Making sure that drives don’t go to sleep, or pulling more media to local drives has helped with slow downs here.
Hope this helps.

I have found that Media Encoder and Dynamic Link grab a lot of system resources and, over time, kill the performance of my machine. A strategic reboot is often necessary.
I have stopped trying to run Media Encoder in the background as I work on other projects. Fortunately, my deadlines allow me to leave batches rendering overnight.
If someone finds a good processor/memory allotment strategy, I hope they will share.

April 22, 2013 at 6:21 pm in reply to: Working happily with CS 6 on Creative Cloud for two days and then…We frequently have strange technical problems with CS6.
I’m not complaining. We are getting work done and are happy with the quality of the output. I wouldn’t say that the issues are any worse than problems I’ve experienced with FCP or Avid.
But, there is a ways to go before I would consider CS6 to be stable. Current issues include:
– Speed Grade basically stopped working. We aren’t using it right now, so we haven’t bothered fixing that.
– Encoder always crashes upon quitting and therefore doesn’t save any preferences.
– Premiere Pro projects often “spoil.” They will work fine one day, then the next they can only be saved with a “Save As”. No data is lost, but what’s that about?
– Using Dynamic Link will, over time, suck up all of the machine’s RAM and eventually forces a reboot.
I’m hoping that these issues will be fixed in the next version.
I really like where CS6 is going. I am confident that we will be using it more and more.

April 2, 2013 at 3:34 am in reply to: Premiere CS6 Markers change source file modification date? Thanks for the suggestion. I tried turning the XMP settings off and importing some new media. It doesn’t appear to have an effect.
It’s interesting that as soon as a Marker is added, the file is modified. It’s not connected to saving the project.
Again, I wouldn’t be concerned about this, except that CatDV seems to care and CatDV is often a canary in a coal mine when it comes to file issues.
Thanks again.

March 26, 2013 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Printing various screens and catalogs in CatDVI agree about the printing. It would be nice to have greater control over page layout at the point of printing.
As far as Excel, you can export data to Excel by exporting as Tab Separated. You can import that into Excel and very quickly make spreadsheets.
If you set up an appropriate custom view, you can limit the amount of data you export.
Hope this helps.

March 19, 2013 at 12:33 am in reply to: Audio doesn’t play in timeline after XML importI recently had the same problem. There is a bug in Premiere that messes up audio levels from XMLs. It’s apparently a known issue and an internet search will yield some work arounds.
The easiest solution for me was to set audio level keyframes for each audio clip in FCP before exporting. It was tedious, but after I set at least one keyframe in each clip, the audio came into Premiere correctly.
Hope this helps.
