In Audition, using the Spectral Frequency Display, I’ve had some luck identifying and fixing unwanted noises using the Healing Brush. It might take some trial and error, but it can really help.

    Good luck.

September 9, 2013 at 8:48 pm in reply to: How to uninstall CS6 stuff since I have CC apps now

CC and CS6 are managed separately by the subscription manager so they can be used and updated independently. I have chosen to leave all of the software on our machines.

If I can keep an old project as a CS6 project, I do so.

“…so I take it FC P 7.0.3/Studio 3 actually does work no problem on Mountain Lion then?”

I have a MBP Retina running Mountain Lion and FCP7 works, but barely. It is very slow. It’s as if the entire program was being emulated. I would be careful when upgrading.

  • I have experienced something like this. On one machine, matching settings works correctly for a ProRes source. On another, the size and frame rate change, but the “match” results in AVCIntra codec.

I think it is a bug.

What I figured out, and it doesn’t make much sense to me, is that Premiere takes the sequence preview codec as the output codec when “matching” sequence settings. So if the sequence has ProRes previews that match the original footage, then it will output correctly using the match function.

On the machine that results in AVCIntra, the preview codec doesn’t get changed.

Bizarre. I ended up creating a ProRes preset to avoid this issue.

    Hope this helps.

Timeline ZOOM defaults to zooming to the playhead, so if you map the ZOOM IN/OUT commands, I think it will accomplish what you are looking to do.

In CC you can map track selectors to the keyboard. I always have to use the search in the Keyboard Shortcuts interface to find what I’m looking for. Some functions in Premiere have unhelpful names.

    Hope this helps.

June 5, 2013 at 1:20 pm in reply to: VTAPE to LTO

    One thing you might check:

After periods of inactivity, sometimes Cache-A disappears from our mounted devices list on the network. I’m guessing it goes to sleep or the server decides to ignore it. Going to the web interface and getting the unit to do something usually brings it back.

I would make sure that the Cache-A is showing up on the Finder and see if it has any relationship to the error.

    Hope this helps.

“The files will transfer to VTAPE, but they no long write to LTO automatically.”

We also have had the same issue. Our problem is with Cache-A not CatDV. Cache-A stopped automatically syncing to the LTO a long time ago.

Now, we load the LTO, set up the VTAPE, eject the LTO, reinsert the LTO and manually Sync. It is very manual, but frankly it is more reliable.

We talked to Cache-A support several times about this issue, but they could not identify the problem without a paid support intervention. Since they could not really identify what the problem was, we chose pursue a work around.

I would make sure that the files on your VTAPE are actually on your LTO before moving on to another tape. The tape info is a good way to be sure that the tape has actually been written to.

    Hope this helps.

  • Sorry. We also have external Sonnet and GRAID SAS storage.

We continued to use the Apple Raid cards until recently. Apple replaced or repaired them. One machine never worked correctly and we attached a Sonnet tower.

The reason I mentioned the Apple Raid Card is, based on the problems we experienced, perhaps the RAID itself is contributing to the crashes. As an experiment, you could try running the job off of different drives and see if you get a different result.

We have learned here that RAIDS are tricky things and can start going bad long before they register a fault in the management software.

  • We also added a SAN connected with fiber. It works nicely with FCP7 and Premiere.

  • We have had battery failures. One card wouldn’t correctly make a RAID set. Another one wasn’t recognized by the system at all. Random reconditioning that would happen during a work day, thus killing performance.

Apple always honored replacement or repair. It just didn’t build a lot of confidence in the product.
