Interesting, a semantic discussion…

A cut is a transition, it can move us from one state, situation, viewpoint(geographic or otherwise) to another. If your students, who may struggle to cut in the right place or the right time, think a transiton must be some type of effect want to argue the point, ask them when a dissolve stops being a transition and becomes a cut, at 1 frame duration or zero…

The fact that a cut is such a finite event doesn’t stop it being a transition, it just makes it a definitive and visualy instant transition.

What distinguishes a cut however is that it can replicate a natural event, ie closing your eyes and then opening them in a differant context, in terms of time, viewpoint, context, mood, etc, etc

Don’t let your students learn their terminology from an Avid manual, give them a dictionary!

cheers, yep, checked cables and drives, all work singularly, I’m fairly sure its not a direct hardware issue, i’ve had all drives on at sonme poinnt to format etc on various buses, spent most of a day watching slow 2k reboots, Avid start up is my main worry, can I disable the process…boot in safe mode?

too late, we’ve spent years trying to make vid look like a progressive format, you need to create fields which aren’t there, you can col correct and plug in to hell and back, but you won’t correct the progressive motion feel.

From a production pov can you shoot it off a monitor?…

waht system are you working on…

if you’re not on symphony, oddds on you’re only option is to either stripe a tape corresonding to your timeline, or adjust timeline start time to match tape stripe

try splicing some filler/ or none good clip across the end of you sequence across all tracks and then try and repull the edl…

Project size has little effect on anything so long as you have the hard drive space to hold it, the overhead on the system is the number of bins you have open and their contents, try and keep as few bins open as poss, try and avoid a bin with 93 versions of the cut open! Use a bin with the current version only, and keep otherr versions in a closed bin until it’s needed, fx templates and titles etc also have an overhead, check your bin sizez in the project window if you’re unsure which bins are pulling!

Thanks guys, but still struggling, tried unique ids on seperate buses as suggested avoiding 7 etc, but it seems whatever combination I try windows gives up once it hits avid startup whenever I use more than 6 drives. Should I look at updating avid start up, can you update avid startup?

Bob, try this out?

5 x 72gb on one scsi card channel, numbered 1-5
1 x 72gb on second channel, numbered 1

everything cool.

Once I add 1 or more drives to the second channel, numberes 2/3 etc windows reaces desktop, then the avid startup appears and it all hangs. I’m fairly sure the scsi’s are all sound.

Any ideas?

didbeta even better, run it back in at 24 times speed wild, tod code, and then pull in the opening and closing sections woth a nice smooth dmc from +1 to -1 x speed and vice versa, stitch it together, couple of mixes, mix down and treat it as a single clip. While you’re at it, chuck in a bb sp tape and suck in some nice sp spooling bars to key over your digi clip. Hey, get two digis and bin the avid!
