The Quad will be a much better investment in terms of longevity. Having used a decked out PB with Motion, I would not advise it. The current PBs are sleek and excellent presentation tools but, I don’t think they make great dedicated workstations. Unless the purchase needs to happen right away, you may want to hold off on buying a Powerbook until Apple revs it this year with Intel H/W. Then it will be a much different horse race.

I think it would be faster to export a single still and draw the art in Illustrator then animate it in AE.

You may want to have him wait until AE 7 arrives. Adobe is well aware of the fact that users are wanting better 3D integration. I would hate to have him duplicate what Adobe is already doing.

[Gary Kleiner] “Don’t forget that you can open mutiple copies of Vegas at the same time. Something no other NLE software does.”

While this is true, it’s a very ineffcient way to handle the need. It means your loading a completely new instance of the whole program. This seems pretty expensive resource-wise for this functionality.

[Tyrone] “do I go AMD dual core or Intel dual core”

No question at this point. AMD dual core is faster.

[Tyrone] “Is 2 gig RAM sufficient?”

Should be fine but, that depends on what you are doing.

[Tyrone] “Which versions of Sony Vegas have HDV support”

The platinum verion of Vegas Home studio and Vegas 6 both support HDV.

[Tyrone] “I know Premier Pro has multiple timelines but it seems Vegas only has one timeline available, is this true?”

Vegas 6 only supports one timeline per project but you *can* import multiple projects into another. Not as ideal as the multiple sequences in PPro or FCP but it’s better than nothing. Let’s hope Vegas 7 comes out with a real solution.

  • [toke lahti] “And iPod is not a PC, so usb cannot be used for dumping to iPod?”

The iPod is indeed more than a HD – it does have intelligence. However, Apple is not encouraging developers to do any software development for the iPod so, until then it would be a rogue experimentation at best.

October 20, 2005 at 7:35 am in reply to: DDR2 RAM: ECC or non ECC?

ECC is error correcting memory which in theory reduces the amount of errors that can be generated in the exchange of data. This should translate into a more stable machine.
