No, that card is pretty poor all around. If you want to be productive in Motion you will want a better card.

[Todd Beabout] “I am really assuming that they are currently ensuring that their Pro apps will be completely optimized for the new Intel chip, and that is probably what FCP6 is going to be about…. Here’s hoping anyways.”
Actually, they are not ensuring optimization but simply that they will run natively. There is a major difference between optimized for a platform and running native on a platform.
In other words, I don’t expect huge performance improvements with the first universal pro apps. If they simply work as advertised I will be pleased.

Is this PPro 2.0 or 1.x? What is your system config?

The 165 is a dual-core chip. One socket – two cores = 2 cpus. A 265 Opteron is a dual core as well. Two sockets – two cores = 4 cpus.

If you want to ease into the transition, you will probably be better off picking up a G5 and getting comfortable with it while still doing your money work on your Meridian. The G5 is a known platform for FCP and is very stable. Then when your ready to switch over, you could pick up a second system(G5 or Mactel) or use the existing G5 with full confidence from your experiences. I don’t think the G5s will be deemed unproductive anytime soon as I doubt that FCP6 or 7 will bring anything to the table tha a dual G5 couldn’t handle.

“How much does it cost to upgrade to Final Cut Studio?
To make it easy to move to Final Cut Studio, Apple is offering low-cost upgrades from retail versions of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro, and Production Suite. When you take advantage of this offer, you

I am afraid I have to agree with specialcase. At this point, even in Maya, there are not MAJOR differences between these cards in performance. The reason is the OpenGL drivers in OS X. I have seen very unfortunate numbers when comparing the same Quadro 4500 on a Quad G5 and a Dual Opteron – the PC workstation numbers were all over the Mac. What’s even more astonishing is that both the 7800GT and the 4500 are not THAT much faster than the 6800 in Motion even though they are much faster cards. There is a bottleneck that is holding these cards back and I think it’s the OS X OpenGL drivers.
The barefeats mad scientist’s experience also reflects this:

My view is if you can wait until March/NAB I would. Not just because that is when the macbook is available but the 17″ prices will also go down . Adobe may also have universal version of AE 6.5 or 7.
I would not buy a 17″ right now but, that is based on my personal experience with buying macs.

There are no G5 powerbooks. Actually, there are no longer Powerbooks.

[Nick Westbridge] ” I know there are obviously no benchmarks yet, but would it stand to reason that a new Intel iMac with dual-core chips might be as fast or faster than the behemoth I just bought and paid almost twice the price for?”
My guess based on the tests that have been done on the Intel dual-cores is that it will be at least as fast as a dual G5. With the specs the MBP has it will most likely be a bit faster than a 2.0 dual.
