They drew those as shape layers and are using the trim paths animator. I think they used trim shapes simultaneously, but you can also set it to individually.

Also play with offset path on individual shape layers for a cool growing effects

I uploaded a project file with it working for you to see.

I did 2 versions. One with the texture throughout, and one with a black stroke instead of the texture (looks better to me). All you have to do to update the stroke color is to change the color of the text in “TextPrecomp 2”

Sounds like you’ve done it correctly.

Make sure you’ve duplicated it enough times. Basically, all it is doing is moving a copy of the same thing back in space 1 pixel for every copy. I recommend making about 30-50 copies. Then parent all of them to the very first text layer. Then add a light (this will make the effect more obvious). Then just rotate the y axis of the first layer of text and you should see the extrusion.

Ray Traced 3d doesn’t render layer styles, so that won’t work.

I’ve seen people get texture on 3d text in AE other ways though.

First, to get your texture on your text, create a large solid with the texture overlay that you want. The import that into after effects. Put that layer in a composition and create your text on top of it. Then under the track matte box, click Alpha Matte. Bam, texture on layer, great!

Now this gets a little trickier. There’s a couple of ways to do this, but this is an old duplication trick.

    1) Precompose your text.
    2) Enable it to be 3d (use the classic 3d)
    3) Put this expression into the position property of the text layer:

    [value[0],value[1],value[2]+index]

    4) Duplicate the text layer as many times as you want (it will become thicker with each duplication)
    5) Parent all of the layers underneath the top layer to the top layer.
    6) Now simply animate the top layer as you wish.

Okay, so I’ve not tried this, but I’m pretty sure it will work. Go ahead and duplicate the rig anyway though so you don’t mess anything up fiddling with it.

Try making the controllers for the hands have the exact same anchor point as the master null object. This way, when you rotate the master null, the others will rotate around the same anchor point.

Can you just precompose the entire rig and do the rotation on the precomp?

First off, I think you’re right about Hyundai. They totally hit the mark with the protective dads. It felt authentic, it related to the product better than any other ad, and it was speaking directly to their target. This one is a grand slam in my opinion. I’m not even a dad and I still loved it. They totally went the opposite of huggies making dads seem incompetent, so I love that too.

Also, the bull date was the first commercial to get a laugh from me. So points there. Can we also talk about how Chevy does a great job keeping the look of their commercials consistent? From the first image of every single one, I knew it was them.

I, like Jeff, am kind of rubbed the wrong way by advertisers grabbing on to things like patriotism and disease. It just doesn’t feel right to me. I understand now, after doing some reading, Chevy is raising some money for cancer, but I was pretty infuriated after watching the commercial because that’s not what I got from it. I basically just heard/saw “celebrate breast cancer survivors with us.” It felt like a robot trying to manipulate peoples emotions.

Bud light was just off the mark. They made some what aesthetically pleasing commercials – but so what? It’s still a watered down beer that people either buy or don’t. I don’t think they done anything short of some branding. Probably not worth that price tag in my opinion. Also, I thought their attempt at humor was pretty weak, but I did like Arnold saying, “tiny tennis.”

Ya, a little underwhelmed overall as well.

Let’s not forget the Puppy Bowl though. Subaru was awesome with their dog tested dog approved campaign. Here’s one of the many awesome ones!

Why not just rotate the master control 180 degrees?

You could create a null object in the precomp, then parent the object in the main comp to that null object.
