February 2, 2019 at 8:49 pm in reply to: VP 13 hanging if I delete media with Auto-Ripple enabled while time-line is playingHi Yan,
After replying to your cross post at Creative Software forum, I went back and did some additional testing in both Magix Vegas Pro 16 and Sony Vegas Pro 13 with 2 different source medias and I cannot duplicate your issue, nor have I read of anyone else posting this issue. That certainly doesn’t mean it isn’t a known issue of course.
Your project vs my project and your system vs my system would probably have a lot to do with your results vs mine.
Can you explain what the crash is like when this issue comes up? I would think, because you say the preview continues that you are not receiving a ‘not responding’ error, or any other popup window error…..is that correct?
Can you pretty much duplicate this when you want or is it more random than that?
I used to get what I call screen freezes (it never happened when I was playing the preview, so I don’t think it is the same as your issue, however……) and at first I was shutting Vegas Pro 13 down and like yourself would lose editing since the previous save as (Windows 7 Pro). Then I discover that is I just did ‘Ctrl+Alt+Del’ then instead of selecting Task Manager I just clicked on ‘Cancel’ when it went back to Vegas the freeze was unfrozen! That is why I suggested doing this on my reply in the other forum. Of course this is the cure, just a workaround if it also would work in your issue. Also the screen freeze I had also followed when I upgraded to VP15 and then VP16. I searched and searched and no one else was having the same issue so my assumption was it was in my system.
I finally got rid of it when I did a clean install of Windows 10. Was it the clean install or Windows 10 that solved my issue? I don’t know, more than likely it was the clean OS install, because I tried every GPU driver available plus a whole lot of other changes and I know I had been running Windows 7 Pro for many years and no doubt there was some garbage in my system.

January 31, 2019 at 10:45 pm in reply to: Sony Action Cam x1000v videos, producing 1 video a mixture of 1080p60 and 4kp30, best output option? (vegas pro 14)Im wondering for those that make a mixture of 1080p60 and 4k30 videos.. what do you output the whole video as.. 4k or 1080 ..
Either way I feel like something is going to be lost being as the 1080 is at 60 fps and the 4k at 30..
Just curious on this.. I was leaning towards doing it at 1080p60 (resampling disabled).. but i’m not sure what that does to the 4k30 video?
Thanks in advance

Hi Mark,There are a few ways you can go with this depending on how much of what is mixed together and the type of subject you have recorded, the delivery format you will render to and how picky you are with the results!
1st, I don’t think you will be happy with uprezing the FHD to 4K, but then again it may be best for you to render a sample and see the results for yourself.
2nd, if you don’t have any fast motion like sports, you probably don’t need the 60p.
But there are workarounds again depending! If you have mostly 4K30p and a little bit of FHD60p, you may want to consider rendering in 4K and instead of uprezing the FHD, put the FHD in a picture-n-picture with some type of defussed back ground (which could actually be the FHD uprezed in the background. If the FHD60p is fast action you could actually leave it at 60p in the 4K30p project and it will play at half speed slow motion. If not action then let it play at 30p and every other frame will be dropped and look just as good as the 4K30p, again provided you don’t uprez the FHD.
If you only have a little bit of 4K30p, you may want to consider running that through a speed change to convert it to 60p using something like ProDad ReSpeedr or Happy Otter Scripts, then put it in a FHD60p project and you can left the 4K downrez to FHD or even use pan & crop for a more interesting look.
And there are more options, but those are my thoughts and suggestions for now.
As a standard, I resist mixing resolution and frame rates because it sooner or later causes problems that require some creativity or the project suffers. I don’t mind shooting in 4K and using that in a FHD project, I just resist the different frame rates unless I’m shooting specific slow motion, like 60p for a 30p project or 120p to a 30/60p project.

Robin, glad you got it worked out. I never like to argue with success, I just want to point out the, “Adjust size and quality for optimal playback” in Vegas Pro 13 is a Preview Window option. Place pointer anywhere in the Preview display and press the right mouse button. The pop-up window has the “Adjust size and quality for optimal playback” option. It shouldn’t make any difference now that you are smoothly previewing, just wanted to point it out for a possible future option.

Robin, are you using the proxy file feature within Vegas?
This doesn’t address directly your concern for your system to run the XAVC-S, but it might shed some light if you took a short test clip, load it into Vegas and render it out using the appropriate Sony XAVC-I format. Bring that test render back in Vegas and see how it runs compared to the XAVC-S. If this previews smoother, then until you figure something out about your system capability, you may want to consider transcoding/converting your XAVC-S files to an intermediate like XAVC-I, Avid DNxHR, or ProRes, of which all should provide for a better/smoother preview.

Eduardo, perhaps you can give us some more information like what does the error message say?
Also, version of Vegas Pro and the build number, screenshot of your Project Properties, what kind of Vegas file are you saving, etc.?

Hi Michael,
I don’t have a direct informative answer to your question, however this is how I understand it. Sony stopped developing GPU support with the last Nvidia being the 500 series (if I am correct, or it may have been the 600 series, but I think GPU acceleration was good for the 400 & 500 series). Then Magix bought Vegas Pro and they are developing around the later models of Nvidia and AMD GPU’s which would probably be something like the GTX 1000 series. Again, I don’t have specific information or knowledge on this, so your 650 may make a difference, it may not.
However, what we do know is Vegas Pro always has has and still today makes better use from CPU power that it does from GPU power. That does not mean there isn’t an advantage to a powerful GPU that fits the support of the current Vegas Pro 16 and somewhat with v15.
But what is more important to you is how GPU on/off effects your source media, your style of editing, the FX’s you commonly use, and the render times (if that is important to you). It’s going to be different for each user. I would suggest a simple test of a 3-5 minute sample project. Leave the problem source media file out of this test, but include some of the common FX’s and editing you normally will be using. Preview quality speed and render speed are the common complaints. I would switch on/off the GPU for previewing the project and see if you can get normal speed preview at the quality you like to use and compare the difference if there is any. Then do some test renders using the format you need with GPU on and then off and compare the render times.
If you are happy with the speeds with GPU off, you have your fix. If you cannot live with the preview and render speeds with the GPU off, then we need to continue for a better solution.
Keep in mind there are some FX’s that will benefit from GPU acceleration, most of which I think will be the OFX types.
Also, you may be able to get the GPU to cooperate by installed the latest driver, or going back several version of earlier drivers.
If I think of anything more I will follow up, otherwise wait for your reply and thoughts.

Hi Michael,
Have you been able to repeat the red screen since your last reply?

Hi Michael,
If you start a new project and import only this file, does it work OK or do you get the red preview? I would turn off sleep mode, as that may disconnect some of the resources Vegas needs. If this problem file will load and preview normally, I would render it out using a render format something like Sony XAVC Long (it will be a large file) and then bring that into your original project replacing the original problem file.

Hi Kelly,
You could post your question in the ‘DaVinci Resolve’ forum of COW. As Resolve 15 now includes Fusion, there are probably folks there familiar with Fusion and how to go about it.
