Larry, your source media looks good with 2 exceptions…..

Frame rate mode : Variable can the DataVideo HDR-1 record ‘Constant Frame Rate’. Most NLE, including Vegas, do not prefer variable frame rate. I have gotten success in the past with some variable frame rate source, but it is always easier on the NLE to either record Constant Frame Rate, or convert the source before placing in Vegas. I know you say it works in 12/14, but variable frame rate just isn’t the best if we can get constant.

Scan type, store method : Separated fields
Scan order : Top Field First
Is there a specific reason you are recording ‘interlaced’ as opposed to ‘progressive’? There is nothing wrong with interlaced if you are going to render your deliverables in DVD, or Bluray, or for some other reason. If you are publishing on the web, viewing on a PC, or showing on a flat screen TV, you are better off with progressive.

Have you open Vegas 14 and Vegas 16 at the same time so you can quick switch between them, even size them so you can view them at the same time and then went through the Preferences settings, as well as, the project settings to determine if there is anything different? Although Vegas Pro 14 was distributed from Magix, it is pretty much the same as Sony Vegas Pro 13. In Vegas Pro 15/16, Magix has made considerable changes. Hopefully for the good, although I’m sure you don’t feel that way at this time!!!

Larry, I’m going to start with an assumption, you have Vegas 12 and 14, along with Vegas 15 and 16 still installed on your computer, so you can make a side-by-side comparison and not working from memory….correct?

Can you post a screenshot of your source media specs using Mediainfo in the Text mode?

You have somewhat answered your own question. If you are using progressive source and rendering to progressive delivery set to disable resample, otherwise I would leave the defaults in the project settings as they automatically go when you match your source.

The exception to that is when you see results you do not like. This could be caused by fast moving subjects or fast panning. Set the quality in the Preview window to Good or Best, which will then display what you will get when rendering. Preview at the speed your system allows in Good or Best, then stop in the section you do not like, and advance frame at a time to determine if you have any ghosting or artifacts. If you do, change the settings in the Project setting (don’t forget to Apply), and view that section again to determine if you have made an improvement, made it worse or no change. Try all the settings to pick the one you like the best…..hey sometimes, it’s by trial and error and that is one of the better methods to use to determine for ourselves how to handle our source media.

Also, bring up the Projects window and click on the ‘?’ to display the context help and read through the Video section, some good stuff there directly from the creator.

Eric, does the i5-7300 have Intel QSV? If so you would have probably already tried it for faster rendering.

If, as Ole suggests, the Sony AVC render format does provide a reasonable render time, you may want to setup frameserving and use Handbrake as the render engine. I have found this to be faster than the render options within VP13 and VP14 has the same render options.

If you are interested in setting this up, here is a tutorial that will take the pain out of the setup and once you have everything installed it is a simple script that takes two clicks. Keep in mind, the process of frameserving involves some overhead time running the scripts, starting Handbrake, loading the timeline to Handbrake and then the render and shutdown process, but if your project is 3-4 minutes or longer, you should get faster render times.

One other thing, although I have not found this to make a difference, others have reported that it may help. Go into Preferences > Video tab and set the thread count to 4 and see if this makes a difference.

Hi David,

Yes I followed all that and Thank You for the detailed workflow explanation. I’m sure you will be happy when this project is completed, I know I would. And, although I haven’t personally used RX7, I have used other iZotope plugins and they are very good. In addition, I doubt I would have follow any other process than you have. Good luck with future projects and hopefully that envelope thing will never haunt you again!!

Re-reading your thread, it appears you are also changing the audio with an external program and that could also be causing some hind of strange condition. What is your workflow for the audio changes? Are you splitting off the audio track, rendering and using that is an audio program, rendering and then bringing that back into Vegas? Or, are you exporting the aufio track from within Vegas to another audio program and back so you do not have to render?

Just read your reply to the replacement file thread. I doubt the reset will do any good (but maybe!!).

What program/tool/app are you using to convert your files? Dud we cover this in the other thread, sorry if this is a repeat question? If I understand you correctly a fresh unaltered mp4 file and the audio envelope works correctly and the color assignment is correct. In the files you have converted is the problem the envelope does not work and the color changes…….do I have all that correct?

If so, then I think maybe trying a different to tool to convert or convert with different settings may be a cure here.

David, I don’t think this is common error. I would start by doing a full reset of Vegas. Hole down the ‘Ctrl+Shift’ keys, then douvle left click on the Vegs desktop shortcut. In the pop-up box check ‘Delete all cached application data’, then left click on ‘Yes’. This will reset Vegas to it’s original installation default settings and delete the pesky cached application data that builds up and will sometimes cause Vegas to do strange things.

Hi Bart, I’m really happy that has made a difference. Variable frame rate video is hard on NLE’s, but often we never have huge multiples of audio, so it rarely comes up. So with your results, I have also learned if I get into that type of project. Thank You for getting back to us with your results and Good Luck on getting a new PC and learning Premiere.

Have you noticed a slow down difference between the mp3, mov and wav audios? Have you tried converting them all to constant bit rate wav? Of course this will make the mp3 larger in file size, but may play smoother and faster.
