Thanks for your response Dave… it’s enlightening and much appreciated. I’m still perplexed though. It’s a program timeline from a project that was saved to a couple of Mac formatted drives (as well as onto a CD). When I transferred the project to my current system (a 2012 IMac) the project opens, as do the bins, but none of the program timelines will open… I get that error message. The same thing happened when I tried my 2008 MacPro. I actually still have the same MacPro G4 that I used when the project was created in 2001 – dusted it off, fired it up, loaded the project and everything including the program timelines opened up no problem. I had saved all the media files onto discs (CDs) and loaded them onto an external drive connected to the G4, added the new drive into the ‘Media Locations’ for the project, but when I asked to re-link the media it couldn’t – everything came up missing. I tried importing a few files and that was no problem, but re-linking to an open timeline (or a bin) failed. Could that be because the media files were saved to discs rather than a hard drive and the required resource forks are missing? I thought I was ‘safe at home’ when the G4 opened everything, but not being able to re-link the media proved me wrong. Any suggestions are welcome.

There’s not much on the Mac side other than Adobe Encore, and it’s not exactly a drag-and-drop process. Custom menu creation is possible but you’ll have to use other applications like Photoshop and After Effects. In case you aren’t aware, Toast does allow you to use custom menu backgrounds.
Another piece of advice: don’t say DVD when you mean Blu-ray – they are two different things.

Looks like it’s a ‘Windows only’ process though… and I don’t do Windows. Personally, I’m not going to bother.

To add to John’s question – what codec are you rendering to? Have you tried rendering to different codecs?

Larger file sizes do not necessarily mean better quality, it usually means it’s less compressed… and that helps FCP work with it. AVCHD footage is no less in quality than ProRes.

Unless you’re using FCPX, make sure the video files from the camera are transcoded to ProRes before trying to edit with them. My guess is you haven’t done this and the computer can’t keep up with playing the video in real-time resulting in the loss of sync. I’m also guessing that Dave misinterpreted your post and assumed you shot using a double system set-up – sorry Dave. I’m assuming you recorded audio with a lapel mic plugged into the camera.

I haven’t been able to find the shot you’re referring to, but based on your description I’m guessing you’ve answered your question – “… the camera pivots around the girl…” – it was probably shot that way… no AE involved.

Is the external drive a new drive? If so, is it formatted for Mac?

What kind of work do you plan to do? What “other systems” have you looked at?
