Canon C100 AVCHD Files to FCP 7 PRO RES Too large ?
I have been able to import avchd footage from canon c100 into fcp7 to pro res with file transfer but files are 4x larger than my Sony EX1 files I also use. Someone told me files should not be this large.
1 min of pro res clip is 886mb.
Am I doing something wrong?

Sony EX shoots XDCAM…that’s a format that is more compressed than ProRes…lower data rate. The C100 shoots AVCHD, and that comes in as ProRes. FCP doesn’t edit that native. And yes, the file sizes get much larger. 1 min of ProRes 422 is roughly 1GB.

Thanks .. This is a big help. I was thinking the files could be smaller in pro res but the 1 gig per minute is the price for greater quality image.

Larger file sizes do not necessarily mean better quality, it usually means it’s less compressed… and that helps FCP work with it. AVCHD footage is no less in quality than ProRes.
