When you say rendering, do you mean exporting? They’re two different things in Premiere Pro. Rendering your timeline provides smoother playback. Exporting is for producing a video file in a specific format of your choosing. When exporting, if you select “Queue” instead of “Export” that opens Media Encoder which takes over the process and frees up Premiere Pro to allow you to continue editing.

Reminds me of a similar problem I had a couple of years ago with an external drive. The cable was fine as you say it is with yours, but the culprit turned out to be the AC power adaptor brick was failing. I only found this out by exchanging the brick with another of the same from a second drive. Ordered a replacement and I was good to go.

Media (audio/video) should ALWAYS be on an external drive. I’m not sure a flash drive would stand up well as far as throughput speed. Maybe, if the machine and flash are USB 3.0 compatible.

Working with HD footage in a SD sequence also allows re-framing shots if necessary… a plus!

Is there audio with the original VHS footage? One thing that might help is telling the story behind the footage which can be as simple as text pages with who, what, where, & why. followed by the footage and more text if needed. Adding text is easily done and can fill in the gaps to the story the pictures alone can’t fill. Could be as simple as time and place. If you want to get really ambitious you could interview family members involved when the event was originally filmed edit their recollections with the footage. Effects won’t make the footage any better. If it’s not telling a story then it’s just pictures with effects applied. If you’re talking about colour correction and image improvement then, as a start, search for “colour” in the ‘Effects’ tab and play with some of the filters to see how they work. How was the VHS transferred to DVD?

Having more information about your settings in Encore would help to find a solution – screen grabs are always nice. What kind (brand, model) of burner are you using? What brand of discs? Have you tried playing back the discs in more than one player?

In Audition you can drag/select consecutive clips in a track and ‘merge’ them into one clip (as long as all the clips have the same number of channels)… and when I say ‘consecutive’, there can be gaps (no audio) between the clips.

Are you working with media on a fast external drive?… or are you using the internal drive for everything?

Premiere has “Lighting Effects”. Do a search for ‘lighting’ in the Effects.

I can’t speak for the specific plug-in you’re using, but some (such as BorisFX as shown in the photo) have the option to ‘register’ in the ‘Effects Control’ tab.
