Okay for students to keep clips and projects on flash drives?
A number of students will be using the same machine to learn Adobe Premiere Pro. Is it okay for each student to keep his or her footage and project files on an external flash drive that they take with them after each editing session rather than on the hard drive of the computer?

Media (audio/video) should ALWAYS be on an external drive. I’m not sure a flash drive would stand up well as far as throughput speed. Maybe, if the machine and flash are USB 3.0 compatible.

Thanks. The students are going to be working on small projects of just a few minutes in terms of the length of the finished piece. Any brand or technical recommendations for an inexpensive external drive that would be adequate? Cost is definitely a factor for the students.

Well they could use a flash drive that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Flash memory has limited read/write cycles and if you are continuously using the drive/stick/whatever it will start losing data and getting errors. Also they are ssssllllooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwww.
A better (but a bit more expensive) alternative would be a small external USB 3 drive that takes its power from the usb port.

What I/O ports are available? USB2, USB3, eSATA, Thunderbolt, Firewire?
