As long as you keep saving or reopening the same VidCap file, you will just keep adding to its log of captured clips. If you have an image instead of the generic filmstrip icon, the media is still on your drive.
As long as you save the vidcap file or have used the files in a saved Vegas project, you can always recapture your footage (assuming you still have the tapes).

It’s just that DV avi doesn’t support alpha channel. Try rendering as uncompressed instead. Same for still images; jpeg won’t do alpha channel, png will.

The current version is 3.0c, so you should update.
Anyway… how are you creating the text highlight? By applying Button Properties> Highlight>Style>Text Mask Overlay?

What are you capturing? If DV, then firewire/usb2 is quite sufficient.

I have a hunch that you are trying to open the veg files by dropping them into the timeline. It doesn’t work this way anymore because that’s how you create nested veg files.
Instead, take the File > Open route.

For the wavy water effect:
Place video of water on track one.
Place the video you want to effect on track two.
Make track two a child of track one.
Change the compositing mode of track one to Custom > Height map.Gary
