[Bouke Vahl] “No soundrecorder for video records at 44.1 “

That would not me be my experience, that is a default for some avid workflows, so it should just be a setting change on the recorder.

“My take is that the drift comes from inaccuracy of the recorder. “

My guess is that you have gaps or holes in your timeline and since the audio has to be rendered to playback, every time you hit a gap, the render engine jumps to the next clip to render, so gradually the audio is taking longer to process then the video is

Render the timeline as an audio only “Item Level Mixdown” to see if that fixes the situation.

  • [Nicholas Natteau] “Am I sacrificing quality by purchasing an HDMI to HDSDI converter box? Or is an HDMI-HDSDI converter box exactly the same as if I had a straight HDSDI connection from tape deck to the MXO2? “

depends on the conversion, some are better than others,

Be aware that the HDMI carries no timecode, machine control or metadata and some converters cannot handle all of the audio formats in the conversion and that you will NOT be able to handle some signals due to HDCP restrictions.

    Who are you kidding?

We are talking about religion here…

    Avid vs. Apple vs. Adobe

April 8, 2010 at 2:05 am in reply to: FCP getting repetitively sluggish with Kona LHi

[Drew Kilcoin] ” just having bad stuttering problems on the output screen and the Canvas every couple hours that leads to a crash.”

that sounds like a memory leak.

    2 ideas

open it up and reset all the ram, pop it out pop it back in.

What else is running in the background? (don’t say nothing, there is always something running in the background- open activity monitor if your not sure)
What 3rd party plugins? any that have expired or are not licensed?
any Hacks or unauthorized / pirated stuff or “borrowed” serial numbers?

Since this happens over a given amount of time, it means that resource are being eaten up by something to the point it crashes the app. That can also be the sign of a failure of the serialization of some apps and or plugins.

April 7, 2010 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro Sync Problems

[Richard Cooper] ” I figured out that it was only when I had a blank spot in my video track it would go out of sync, then when I stopped and started again it was back in sync. I fixed this by putting a slug in my video track where I wanted black and this fixed my problem. “

    Hey richard.
That would be a cure for incorrect sampled audio (as should an item level mixdown)

The reason the slugs help is pretty simple, by having some type of video in the timeline it is forcing the rendering engine maintain time sync. The reason is ANY Gaps in the timeline are signaling to the renderer to ignore that open space and jump to the next clip that needs to be rendered- so effectively you are telling the system that it is OK to play the audio out of sync- Make sense?

Additionally Are you using Dual System Sound also or was it recorded directly in camera?

May I suggest something to try?

Turn off the RT engine then drop the clip w/ audio in the timeline (DO NOT let FCP change the settings) if that clip or the audio needs to be rendered it means that it is incorrect for the settings.

April 7, 2010 at 4:19 pm in reply to: digitizing HDCAM library to ProRes422HQ process

[Michael Gissing] “SDI is superior to component so go with the JH3”

    Careful,

People often think that infers a quality difference in the signal.
When in reality I think you mean that with HDSDI there is far more info being passed over the digital pipe rather than the analog one. HDSDI includes video, audio and the ancillary data like Timecode, frame data, VANC, and some 2000 other types data can be handled over the single digital pipe.

HDSDI is the digital variant of analog Component + audio.

I could not agree more, if you really want a good time you should see people like Tim and I do this Live and In person at the bar.
It is far more engaging that way and a helluva lot more fun too.

April 6, 2010 at 12:04 am in reply to: Sure see a lot of 23.98 Pro Res/Kona sync threads

[Shane Ross] “ere are many of us who cut 23.98 ProRes (and DVCPRO HD) all the time with zero sync issues. This is tough to figure out for those of us who have no problems. “

    I agree

One constant seems to be audio NOT recorded as part of the video, and that leaves me to believe that apple changed something and didn’t tell anyone.

    Paul,
Did you do an “item level mixdown” of the audio inside of FCP?
This will clear up any compression discrepancies issues, and if it works it means that somewhere in your workflow the audio is not being handled as a 48k 24bit signal.
