  • is HDMI to HDSDI conversion same as straight HD SDI connection?

Posted by Nick Natteau on April 7, 2010 at 1:42 pm

I recently purchased the Sony HVR-M25U HDV tape deck and discovered to my disappointment that I could not upconvert from SD to HD by going HDMI from my Sony HVRM25U to my Matrox MXO 2.

I was told that if I wanted to upconvert digitally, I would need to either purchase an HDMI to HDSDI upconverter or upgrade to a tape deck with HDSDI out.

Am I sacrificing quality by purchasing an HDMI to HDSDI converter box? Or is an HDMI-HDSDI converter box exactly the same as if I had a straight HDSDI connection from tape deck to the MXO2?

So far the least expensive mini-DV tape deck with HDSDI out I could find was the Sony M35U.

Thanks very much in advance for any advice,

    – Nick

Should be. Just taking the digital signal and changing the connection type. But I’m guessing…I’m not an engineer.

depends on the conversion, some are better than others,

Be aware that the HDMI carries no timecode, machine control or metadata and some converters cannot handle all of the audio formats in the conversion and that you will NOT be able to handle some signals due to HDCP restrictions.

    Hi Shane and Gary,

Thanks for replying. I chose to get the Aja HA-5:

    .

I just wonder if I should not instead be getting the Sony HVR-M35U.
