You do not need the Kona or Blackmagic card to display your work. You can output the component signal from your HDV camera to a component monitor. You can also downconvert the HDV to DV or you can output just DV via firewire < I>
Incorrect Steve -The native HDV content will NOT playout an HD signal to a monitor without rendering if you do not currently use a Kona2 Card. While I am sure that BMD may have this working by the time FCP5 ships, at the show all realtime playback of HDV Native content was only being shown via the Kona2 Card. What good is working in HD if you cannot view it in High Def in realtime. ( down-converting to DV is not a option it is a kluge -frame delays and audio sync issues abound)

What?! The camera is $6,000, has a tape drive and P2 slots. P2 cards cost you more (a lot more). You CANNOT record DV50 or DV100 to tape (P2 only).
Ed “Sorry Ed but that is not correct, I spent a good deal of time with the product manager when she spoke at the FCPUG meeting at NAB and I checked
what I said against the Powerpoint shown to the group. -
Damn it Marco

I talked to someone at the AJA booth this week at NAB about getting video out of Shake through an Io. He gave me some quick instructions, but I can’t seem to get it right. Anyone have any suggestions?
That would have been me.
Shake does not have realtime playback of video as it is a “render’ based video display. IF you read the shake manual
under video out you will see that you need to render out the file and set some parameters. IF you follow the instructions on Page 63-65 of the manual (or look in the help on those same pages)this only works on the mac- nothing else

It is odd that they include this functionality on the AJA card… It seems like those who *need* it would have much bigger/expensive solutions already.
Not really AJA, is looking at the one area that offers the greatest needs in new technology, the feature film community,
and when pushing the high end of any technology it allows the “cool new features” to flow down to us mere mortals.SONY has dictated that all of the trailers and DI for their movies will be done in this format. just staying ahead of the curve with real products and real solutions.

Let me clear up a couple of Misconceptions I have heard about the HDX-200
The $6000.00 version of the camera is uses DV Tape, On the $9000.000 version with 720p 24 you get about 20 minutes per card and you can hot swap them. All you need to remove the contents from the card is to plug it into the PCA slot on a laptop and copy. it will take about 5 min, to copy the contents of the 8 gig card. Yes it does have a FW 400 connection.
you get VFR capture when using the P2 system, but it supports 24p 30p and 60i in 1080 / 720 / 480 when recording to tape. The tape and cards record DV25 / DV50 / DV100 —- NOT MPEG.
The Scene markers are seen by FCP’s DV Start / Stop detection.
Both SMTPE 601 and 709 bars and tone.
The camera Mic is actually usable in the P2 modes as there is no tape transport to generate noise.
Oh did I say it’s NOT MPEG ….

I want to add a couple of things from the show floor, the other “little announcement” was the release of the Kona TV app. This Free Download is absolutely amazing. IT allows you to drop a QT Ref file or Movie on it and it plays the content out to tape — anything with a NATIVE QT codec….
that means that Animation codec output files can be printed to tape without rendering, from Motion, AE, LT, combustion, etc…<<<< ( I have not had a chance to try pixlet yet)
WIth FCP5 the K2 scaling engine will allow for playout to tape without requiring renders when using HDV content.
When Using Soundtrack Pro- you do not have to render a compressed preview, the K2 fully supports Full Rez Video and Audio with sync sound via the board’s AES/EBU so everyone with a K2 gets Pro tools like functionality out of the box.
I did not see this as the biggest NAB in AJA’s history, but considering that everything announced was shipping
before the show we did not have do deal in “vapor ware”.I also did not see anyone mention that every single output in both Apple booths were using Kona2 cards. No Other company was represented, and that says a lot.

Could someone give me a quick explanation of what makes 4:4:4 HD desirable over a single link (4:4:2?) HD?
Dual Link requires 2 things Currently – an SR Series HD cam Deck or a device that can generate the Dual LInk Signal like the Viper And Huge amounts of REALLY REALLY high speed storage. AS stated before that is meant to be film replacement. According to the AJA data rate calc that signal requires Drives that need to capture the 1920×1080 Progressive RGBA signal at 23.98 is over 200 mgs per second. and NOTHING is in realtime.
@ 60fps we are talking about data rates near 497 megs a second (that is NOT a Typo)
The Reality here is that there are very very few people that currently have access to this hardware, I have been told there are currently less than 100 of the decks in the US. (correct me if this is inaccurate)

I didn’t see anything either on the AJA website or their forum here on the Cow that says 10.3.9 has been approved for use with Kona 2. I wouldn’t update any OS unless there is specific information that has approved the OS.
There is an announcement that FCP 5 will be supported when it’s released, but nothing about 4.5 / 10.3.9.there is not a know issue with the Kona 2 Board BUT there is a known Issue with FCP 4.5 and 10.3.9 relating to capture –

Both the Io and the Kona 2 will support all of the functions in FCP5 when it ships. HDV editing will use the scaler technology to allow for Video out using the Kona 2 board. as FCP needs hardware to playout native HDV content to a broadcast monitor.
Other apps such as Soundtrack Pro will sue the K2 board. STpro uses the Core Audio / Video to play out your STPro project files (both audio and video) out via the K2.
