NO!!!
by maintaining the full 4096 width when scaling to 1080, you will reduce the overall quality of the compressed content by as much as 50% (especially when the using the default compression output settings from either FCP or Premiere. I recommend that you crop the file to 3840×2160 prior to the downcoversion step so that the scale was handled seperately from the the compression to 1080.

[jim bachalo] “Thanks, but just about every NLE, or compositing tool I can think of has built in curves”
That does not mean that they are an RGB colorspace
If you are not working in 444 you cannot be not working in RGB color.

[jim bachalo] “Can’t believe there is no built-in curves for colour correction in FCPX. “
Jim,
did you think about the reality that video in NOT RGB (it’s YCrCb) and that is why there are not many tools that support RGB for video workflows.

August 4, 2014 at 1:35 pm in reply to: Why does Arri describe the Alexa as having a “35mm” PL lens mount?[Chelsea Craig] “I understand what a PL lens mount is but why throw in the 35mm? It isn’t a film camera and it is describing the lens mount.”
Actually while the PL mount is an Arri invention (it stands for Positive Locking) there are other image sizes that also use that same mount.
35mm refers to the Super 35 (S35) film/ sensor size – making sure that you use glass that covers that sensor.
There are 16mm PL Lenses would be fine for the smaller size film and sensors (~ â…”” of an inch) but cause vignetting or portholing where the lens does not cover the entire 35mm area.
There are some lenses designed for larger formats (70mm) that use other types of camera mounts like Panavision (PZ) even Hasselblad (Phantom 65)

August 2, 2014 at 7:07 pm in reply to: what to do when importing alexa files from unformatted cards into FCP[Stella Ramsden] “In your opinion, is it okay to work with this footage, even though the numbering was wrongly reset?”
if the content plays properly, why not?
Understand that these file are going to cause problems. Name them something that stands out so that everything you have to reconnect or search it will be easier to find.

August 1, 2014 at 5:02 pm in reply to: what to do when importing alexa files from unformatted cards into FCP[Stella Ramsden] ” was told by the camera trainee/DIT that two of the cards had been wrongly formatted”
Not using a trained individual was the first mistake and what happened to you is the single reason I NEVER return cards to the camera department with media on them, I will offload, check that all is correct then format the cards as Mac Journaled- that forces the camera dept to reformat every piece of media when inserted in the camera (when cards are blank they take about 15sec to format)

August 1, 2014 at 3:22 pm in reply to: what to do when importing alexa files from unformatted cards into FCP[Stella Ramsden] “Yesterday, 2 cards were not formatted before use, so they have come in displaying old roll numbers.
“Can’t happen by accident, The Reel, Roll and Takes continue to rise by default, the only way for an Alexa to count backwards is to have one of the camera assistants physically reset the numbering.
“030C001-A030-003”
That is NOT a Proper Alexa Formatted file naming convention, what does the DIT or Loader say about the content, were there any notes from onset?File naming should always look like this A253C003_131016_R2L1.mov
The naming structure break down like this.
A253 the Letter and the number indicates the number of Cards or Mags that have been reformatted in the camera- Letters usually are set to define which camera (A, B, C) and the reformat counters are usually reset by either the rental houses or by the camera assistants and is only done at the start of production.
C003 the is clip or take numbering and is defined in the camera after cards have been formatted, it can be manually changed (usually backwards) but it is counting up the number of takes (or media Clips) that have been recorded.
_131016_R2L1 This is the camera serial number that the media was shot on.

[Fabrizio D'Agnano] “An external USB 3.0enclosure with a single 2.5″ drive seems not to suffer this issue, and does not get disconnected even if the Mac goes to sleep”
USB3.0 is not designed for use with raid sets, while some manufacturers have had some success, the majority of 3rd party USB3 solutions will not support software raided multi-disc volumes. It’s the best reason to go with Thunderbolt connectivity on newer computers for Video applications.

July 24, 2014 at 1:44 pm in reply to: New Pegasus2 R4: MacPro starts up but screens are black[Robin S. Kurz] “It would certainly make a difference if the TBo 1 came before the TBo 2 device in the chain,”
having a 10GBps then a 20GBps on the same buss only really affects the connection speed between the devices and that alone would not cause the units to keep the CPU from Booting.
I have over 100 TBT devices in my offices and I have worked every variety of connection variable possible and at no time did the device connectivity keep a machine from booting.
I think it is more that the 2 devices were set at the factory to have the same LUN and startup order causing a conflict when the are inline with one another- by switching each to an open port- it allowed the CPU to override / stagger their startup sequence order

July 24, 2014 at 1:29 pm in reply to: New Pegasus2 R4: MacPro starts up but screens are black[Robin S. Kurz] “Because one is TBo 1 and the other TBo 2.”
Not really Robin, the order should not make a difference in the connections if all are powered, only the bandwidth on devices farther down the chain.
One thing to remember about Thunderbolt devices- each device sends a power signal to the next device in the chain, that alone can be an issue when daisy chaining buss powered devices without external power supplies.
It could be a bad second TBT port on the new unit, how the cable was wrapped and how it was inserted into the connector, no difference than any other device protocols
