Can others edit HD in RealTime?
Yes, but not the way you are set up. Walter, Steve and I do it everyday.
Walter and I work mostly in 720p, I believe Steve works mostly in 1080 ( right?)

SO lets start over –
What are you trying to accomplish with your FCP system?
Are you going back to film or are you attempting to try DI.
Are you working with Flex files and Keycode.

what is your final project deliverables – Filmout, HD, SD or DVD – NTSC or PAL

IT sounds as if you are treating your FCP system as something else altogether and you should really think about
getting a professional to setup and guide you thru this process. it is not plug and play – editing UnCompressed HD
footage is not an easy task needs to be treated with a little respect.

I do not disagree with you Les, but it is the reality of working in FCP. Apple shuns all 3rd party vendors and/ or developers that try to offer hardware acceleration for FCP.

I cannot think of a single vendor within the apple sphere of influence that has a currently shipping product that offers hardware acceleration that is “Certified” or “Qualified” for use with FCP 5.

Call it “Ad speak” and on the printed literature it does say “support for al”l of those products.
You are correct in your assumption that the Kona products do not include any 3rd Party software products as part of the purchase.

Paul the original quote Apple has never said that you Uncompressed HD in real time in anything other than the apple or panasonic compression format- Avid and others share the same philosophy.

I said to get real time playback you need to use an Apple or Panasonic codec, –No Nitris system I have ever heard of would play back 2 streams of some “none” compressed HD on any type of machine. To get real time DVE and color correction on any platform you need to use the custom codecs and setting each of the manufacturer supplies— not something random that you choose.

In this workflow there is no RealTime anything.
Apple has never said that you Uncompressed HD in real time in anything other than the apple or panasonic compression format- Avid and others share the same philosophy.

And the RT that Apple speaks about is in 720p, not a 1080 timeline with no compression to the video at all. In reality it actually surprises me that the a single scsi array can handle the data rate for 1080p video using “none” for compression (something near 320mgs a second or nearly the data stream of Dual Link)

Sorry , but this is an apples and oranges, PC’s can offer hardware acceleration that cannot be had on a mac due to apple’s limitations for hardware boosts with FCP. Same with Avid.
Apple is a hardware company that wants to sell more machines, faster, newer machines, that is the driving reason not to allow for hardware acceleration.

Then the answer is to use the proven products that are currently shipping. Nothing in the video hardware pool for PCIe will be out before Oct. 31. Stick to the 2.7 DP and live with it.
