I posted this in the P2 forum but someone sugeseted I post here also.

I downloaded a MXF file and I can’t get it into FCP. I read the P2 data sheet and it says that all files are stored in the MXF file. Now FCP5 says it supports P2. So why can’t I see or get at this file.

Seems to me that FCP only is able to see the P2 card but not read/use the info on it without flip4mac. Why so many steps? The price for Flip4Mac is crazy and Panasonic should make it so we can use these files without all the run around. Am I missing something.

When Apple says is supports P2, to me that means all of P2 card and files on it, right? Kinda like buying a car and not getting the wheels.

Try going to Panasonic and dl the P2 for fcp plug?

I’m not sure if this answers your question, but this is my guess.

Thats because it is an import function in FCP5 only.
It is not available as a separate plugin

In FCP5 Go to file > import > panasonic P2

I know about the import P2, Gunleig was talking about a pluging that I am pretty sure does not exist. But the is now what my question is.

Are there any people using FCP 5 and P2 media? I want to know how you get the MXF files that are stored on P2 into FCP. This is about P2 MXF, NOT “MXF IMX from XDCAM”.

    Yes you’re right!

What I was thinking of was this:

    https://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=R&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94208&catGroupId=14569&modelNo=AJ-HDC27H&surfModel=AJ-HDC27H

Follow the Download link. But it’s only a framerate converter for varicam footage.

After a quick search, though, check these links. Hope they help:

    https://www.hff-fcpug.de/Wissenspool/fortgeschritten/p2/p2.html

Seems you need flip4mac to use these files natively, as FCP just imports them through FireWire natively.

Interesting for someone looking at p2 solutions these days…

As I posted in the Panasonic P2 Camcorders forum, did you follow the instructions in the FCP User Manual? There are very detailed instructions on how to import media from P2 cards. MXF is simply a container file, the media needs to be converted to Quicktime for FCP to use.

I just did a search using the “Help” feature in FCP and it brought up a full PDF on working with HD formats. The full import instructions are right there. Took me all of 1 minute to find the info. I don’t use P2 yet, but I’ll certainly start out by using these steps when we get the 200 camera.

Reading the instructions in the FCP User Manual shows that FCP will convert the files to Quicktime and place them on your Scratch Disk. No other software necessary.

Thank you Walter I read the help file, crazy thing is I was reading it before but focused on the MXF part and never got to the P2 part. I was so close to the wall I could not see it.
