[Gary Taylor] “I don’t know if you have more than one S2S but can you think of anything that would prevent you from software striping two units together?”

I have not tried this yet, but the 3 things that I think of that may be problematic would be
    1) there is only one SATA connection on the S2S – and that goes to the HBA
    2) multiple S2S;s on one HBA may actually decrease the bandwidth.
    3) adding extra HBA’s to one machine could possibly not allow the use of your capture card.

[david garcia] “Does it matter whether we go with the 1.25 gig S2S or the 2.5? I would consider 6 streams to be a minimum. And we’d love to be able to do one stream uncompressed for greenscreens and effects. “

Bigger storage will last longer. But are you really talking about needing to have 6 live streams of video
on the screen at all times? thats one very busy piece of video.

Notice also that not once has someone mentioned that the compression / decompression load is really the issue, even with the frame scaling being handled by a kona card the CPU still is handling the file compression and that is what is limiting the number of layers to about 6 in DVCPROHD

    I have hit 8 layers on a 4G fibre array on 720p24 8bit.

[Fred Connors Jr] “norder to use a new Quad Core G5, you will have to wait for AJA to release a KONA-2e, PCI Express KONA2.”

The Kona LH-e is shipping today and is currently the only PCIe card shipping for capture in FCP for the new Mac’s.

[Fred Connors Jr] “Also, most current Serial ATA RAIDS offer no data protection at all. And they are have very flimsy serial ATA connections to each enclosure/drive.”

The S2S array from lacie can be set to run in raid 5 and the cable from my machine to the array is no more
“flimsy” than a FW or SCSI cable is.

    November 21, 2005 at 3:28 pm in reply to: I got a good one….

[Dale McCready] “In theory shouldn’t the ramped footage just be marked as flagged or dupe just like any other off speed shooting but with a different distribution of flagged frames as the ramp progresses?”

Correct, but it is that change in the cadence or sequence of the flagging of frames that can cause the errors. When the next flag in the seq is not where the computer expects it, based on how it has read the previous cadence of flagged frames, FCP will often rejects the capture, just as if the timebase of the footage changed from 24 to 30.
Do you have any idea how complicated the process is when the frame rate changes from 11 to 17 frames?
the cadence has to adapt on the fly in what the computer is simultaneously converting back to a 24p timebase. (which is ALWAYS 23.98 in the software FRC in Final Cut)

My Kona cards operate in a similar fashion to Panasonic’s frame rate converter, the AJ-FRC27 as do the solutions from Rave HD (which use the Linux version of the Kona card) This type of hardware allows me to handle that footage as either DVCPROHD or as a uncompressed stream, and can actively capture the ramped speed change easily.

[FireLine Studios] “I’m using a BM card. Do you have a link to anything that explains the process of converting ramped footage?”

It is my understanding that the BMD cards do not support VFR capture over SDI. The BMD web site says their HD cards only support 24, 30 and 60 fps setups. If theta is the case you would follow the FCP instructions for the Software Frame rate converter available on the 1200a support page.

[david garcia] “I ask him How many streams of DVCPRO HD I can get out of a raid that’s clocking 180MB/s. (lacie’s claimed speed) “

    David,
720p24 on an 2.5 Dual and an S2S array I get about the same performance with as I do over 320 SCSI, but not as much as I get over a real fibre connection, but for a single user well worth the price difference. (that would be 6 layers on screen with scaling)

1080i60 / 720p60 you should get about 4 (2.5 times as much data means less real time)

I do not know if it was me you were talking to, but a single SATA drive will only do about 2 streams, a array like the S2S has multiple disks and therefore you get better performance.

November 19, 2005 at 12:22 pm in reply to: .mov different on PC than Mac?! AJA 525 codec to blame?

[AJPME] “That didn’t help either so I reexported via Quicktime conversion to the “DV NTSC 48k” codec. Again it looked great on the Mac and extra compressed on the PC. Anyone know why”

I agree with Steve, if you are using AJA’s windows codec, it should be able to see the QT file correctly.

But to answer your question, you could be seeing a reversed field issue, but most likely the difference between how the 2 operating systems screen “rendering intent” is different. The Gamma of your Mac display is 1.8 and your PC diplays gamma is normally 2.2

The 2 images should look the same on a NTSC / PAL Television however

November 18, 2005 at 12:38 pm in reply to: Can someone explain High definition please

after seeing the HVX200 in a hands on demo during Nab Post + (east),on Wed, I have an even higher expectation than I had before.

IT really does not care what format you think you need, the X200 can do it.
1080p24 /720p24 / 480p24 — this is going to be the ultimate camera for 2nd unit work, something that is going to be used by pro’s to cover action, or when you need jam a camera into an incredibly tight location, but still need to get “real HD” out.

The camera is much more than I expected it to be, (which was a lot), and it is going to be hot.

[Gary Taylor] “Decklink cards is that downconversion quality is in question. I only hear great things about the AJA cards but it would be great to do a head to head comparison.”

all AJA products do their down-converts in hardware- that means realtime. no delay, no waiting.
