Thanks for that, Simon. I should probably have mentioned, my background isn’t black – it’s a full-frame gradient. Invariably, reflections tutorials use solid colour backgrounds, usually black.
I’ve been able to get a reflection, albeit without the original colours, by using a black floor and setting its blend mode to Silhouette Luma. I’m assuming that if I wanted it in colour, I’d just have to duplicate and flip the text? The reflection can appear in colour dependent on the blend mode, but it doesn’t look quite right in any of them.

Which version of OSX was pre-installed on your MBP when you bought it? If it was Mavericks you may be out of luck. Apple specifically warns against trying to install or boot from an earlier version of the OS than the computer came with.

OK guy, thanks. So just to reiterate, FCPX’s framerate conversion from 23.98 to 25fps will *not* do any frame interpolation or blending, nor will it just repeat one frame every second?
Also, what would happen if I loaded a 23.98 AVCHD clip with 5.1 AC3 audio? Can FCPX cope with that and allow me to manipulate each of the audio channels individually?

I can confirm that I’ve seen a gamma shift in the past after exporting stills from FCP7, working on them in PS (usually painting things out) and then reimporting them. But I’ve just tried a few experiments now, and I can’t replicate it!

Great, thanks! As it happens, XDCAM is exactly what I need to export as MXF. I’ve been getting round it by exporting the video from FCP and then importing it into PPro and doing the final MXF export from there.
EDIT – OK, I’ve installed XDCAM Browser, but it appears to be a standalone app. I don’t have any new export options within FCP7 itself. What have I done wrong?

FWIW, there’s a freeware workaround that definitely works (I’ve used it myself many times), but it takes a little while.
I use tsMuxerGUI to demux the .mts, then MKVtools to rewrap the streams as MKV. After that, they can be opened in QT7 (if you have Perian installed) and exported to ProRes.

FWIW, I’ve experienced this same problem, but only in Motion 4 – not in Motion 5 (which I’ve only recently switched to).
I’ve also had issues in Motion 4 with crashing or corrupted frames when rendering movies in Best quality that use very large vector images in conjunction with motion blur, such as zooming into title captions. I’ve yet to create any projects in 5 that might cause the same problems, but I’m obviously hoping that 5 can cope, being natively 64-bit and all.

Bummer. I figured as much, but wondered if maybe there was some trick I didn’t know about.
BTW, have you left Motion behind now, Stephen? Shame if so, I learned a lot from your tutorials.
