  • Do I need Cinema Tools any more with FCPX?

Posted by Gareth Randall on September 29, 2014 at 6:08 pm

My current FCP7 workflow frequently involves being supplied with 23.98 AVCHD video that I have to transcode to ProRes, and then conform to 25fps with Cinema Tools. It’s been suggested to me that I could just throw the source files into FCPX and it would take care of everything for me, with no need for separate transcode and conform steps in external apps any more.

Is that right? Would FCPX carry out the 23.98>25 framerate conversion the same way Cinema Tools does, *without* doing any frame interpolation or other unwanted stuff like that?

Simply import and use the Retime menu to set to “Automatic Speed”, yes.

I would add that using CT to re-stamp the frame rate causes a sample rate change to the audio. I have had cases of severe audio distortion on export because of this. The problem was not evident inside X and audio volume was set to 0. So yes, use Automatic in the Retime menu instead.

OK guy, thanks. So just to reiterate, FCPX’s framerate conversion from 23.98 to 25fps will *not* do any frame interpolation or blending, nor will it just repeat one frame every second?

Also, what would happen if I loaded a 23.98 AVCHD clip with 5.1 AC3 audio? Can FCPX cope with that and allow me to manipulate each of the audio channels individually?
